If the other vehicle is smaller than you then you are always better of hitting it than a solid wall..

we did this in first year mech eng, hitting identical cars head on at the same speed is the same as hit a wall at the speed indicated. The other car adds its inertia to the crash = mv2
Ie mv2=mv2
