Just came across this if anyone in Melbourne wants a cheap-as chips motor for dummying up a turbo install, pillaging bits off...etc

*clicky*

I wonder who got it. Probably some bastard wrecker. I would have got it, but shipping would have been prohibitive...

...what's up with your valvetrain?

Money-shifted it a few months back, hit 9-10,000rpms. My mech said I collapsed valve bucket, and or stretched valve/s.

Thats always helpful for a car to rev a few grand less than that.... hahahahaha. Lucky it was just the valvetrain and nothing underneath that broke apart, then you would certainly need a new engine

How the hell did you do that? Shouldn't the rev limiter just bounce it at 7ish?

Stretched valve is possible...but I wouldn't have expected it. Normally over-rev will either

a) spit a piston out the side of the block
b) stretch the cam chain/break valve spring
c) valve bounce (not extremely damaging)

Collapsing a valve bucket is more likey, but still weird.

What are the symptoms?

I believe GMS Spares would have a few engines, give them a try.

It could be. I've sent an enquiry to them, got a good reply straight up, but haven't heard from them since.

According to posts on the net by searching MZR instead of Duratec, they are interferance engines.

The bad news: these are interference motors. The good news: they use timing chains, so I don't believe there is a replacement schedule.

Im not to sure what clutch Im going to use yet. Im either going to the wreckers
to grab a stock standard flywheel and get it lightened.
I have a friend with 3axis cnc mill and another friend with a lathe and mill so I might make one from scratch or modify the pinto flywheel if its possible.

Apart from that the T9 gearbox might not hold up too well. I was reading a cartam build up where the the guy installed a t9 behind a 245hp duratec and it cracked the cast iron casing on his first test run around the block. ITB's should get me to 200hp So Im looking for alternative gearbox's as well.

Nope, that's not the one I was thinking of. Good to know you got some use out of my endless ebay trawling though :P

If you're looking for alternative gearboxes, I'd recommend a W58 toyota box. Just make sure you get one out of a celica, or another passenger car, because the hilux/hiace ones have a REALLY short 1st and 2nd...

Not sure if your still watching this thread GTPaul, but what about a Mazda MX5 gearbox and clutch? They'd just bolt onto the Duratec and won't be the weak link in the driveline.

Get a custom tailshaft and your set!
