Wasn't the goal back in the 70s when you had a Mini to try and fit as many people as possible into them? My dad managed 9 people lol. Still, dangerous to be driving around like that - especially unlicensed.

this little monkey will be dealt with appropriately under the existing regulations because he is both unlicensed and uninsured, both are huge no nos even before we get to overloading. If the police charge him with dangerous driving, it becomes a criminal offence, not traffic.... I doubt this guy will see his license in a long time and if he is caught again risks jail time... |

What is happening to Victoria. Soon you will not be able to change lanes without being deemed a hoon.
Maybe they should look at calling people who drink drive hoons and impound there cars. Not some kid who did a stupid act. |

The term is thrown around way to loosely these days. It's bureaucracy gone mad almost.
Like every one, I'm all for safe driving. I wont discount that at all. But when you're labelled a 'hoon' for exceeding the speed limit by 5-10kms for example. What happened to it simply being a speeding offence rather than "A breach of anti-hoon laws"? |

Eventually the term 'traffic offense' will not exist. Every law you break in a car will be called hooning.
I saw some guy only flash his indicator once while changing lanes today. Couldn't help myself but yell out "***** HOON" Then I realized that abusing other drivers was also classed as hooning....... whoops. Last edited by Auslandau; 14-04-2011 at 01:34 PM. Reason: Swear FIltered |

This isnt hoon behavior, its stupid, uneducated behavior, but far from hooning. It sounds to me the gov want to make this an example and place a blanket rule of this situation to gain more acceptance amongst the public.
Why are the parents held more responsible rather than penalizing 'other' roads users with nanny laws?

It's funny how everyone calls it hooning, but when you go to court for an offence, they do not actually call it hooning. For example if you get caught doing burnouts, you are charged with careless driving, loss of traction.
Hooning is just a word made up by the media, so I guess any wrong thing on the road could be called hooning. I do think Ted Baillieu is trying to win votes, and make it look like the government are actually trying to solve a problem. |

I recall an incident from the late 80's/early 90's where some ridiculous number of people crammed into I think a Triumph Stag, crashed on again I think Ballarat Rd near Sunshine and caught fire. Killed a few too because they couldnt get out.

F'n nanny state!
The guy didn't even have his licence yet Yet again an unlicenced driver gets the hoon tag and the licenced drivers get hit with the penalties!!!!!!! Obviously the states nanny rules aren't working with the kids these days! How about try something different like driver education in schools? No they can't do that as that will cost the government money!

Well, Dad reckons he managed 15 people in an XC station wagon in the 70s.
Its not like this hasn't been done before right? I don't see the shock and horror. |

i dont really have any issue with whether its "hooning" or not. The fact was that there were nine other people who there that were also behaving badly and look like they are going to get away scott free?
Perhaps they have already been fined for not wearing seatbelts(which you can be if over 15 or 16), but perhaps if we instituted some harsh punishments and fines(losing their licence/learner's permit, being banned from getting a licence for 5 years etc) for being in a car that is "hooning" then we would make young people think carefully about egging on the driver or perhaps not even getting in the car when they know the driver is an idiot that is going to show off. So there may be an innocent person stuck in a car with an idiot driver who gets copped with a fine, if all that happens to them good. Im predicting the detterent effect on others could see a rapid change in behaviour. |
