Weekender as your daily?

Hi guys

I am asking the question if there a many guys/girls that drive their weekend warrior on a day to day basis? What problems do you face? Reason being i have 3 cars under my name... The misses, my daily and my weekender. It would be great if i could sell my daily and save some cash on reg, insurance, fuel and etc... Is it worth getting a couple of scratches on your pride and joy for the savings that might come my way?

What sort of awesome dailys are people driving?

The car in question is a 1977 XC sedan with xr6 turbo running gear. Pretty much a full re-build. The car owes me between 30 - 40k.

Due to the running gear being out of a new car does it make it easier to use a daily?

With the new gear in it it would make it more reliable one would assume,
however I guess it depends how much scratches, dents, stonechips etc worry you.

Also I think driving your pride and joy every day makes you forget how special it really is and how much of a great car it is. If you drive your pride and joy only on occasion you will keep that sense of feeling and continue to see it as something really special.

My car is nothing special to a lot of people (is to me), but I wish I could afford to buy a small run around. Not really to save on fuel, but so I can keep my xr6 in better condition and stop worrying about what could happen every time I have to leave it somewhere like a car park.

Drove my xa ute as a daily for over 3 years. On hot days it was a shunt of a thing to start. No aircon for hot days, just the heat of the 351 where ever you go
used to park it anywhere with alarm and insurance for piece of mind
just expect the worst that can happen and as long as you have insurance its not that bad

The way i see it, if i spend all this money on a car, id like to use it a little more than once a month

Whatever suits you and your situation, cars a personality thing, everyone is different

I have used my olden holden as my daily on occasion.

The good:
You don't have tolerance for anything but proper full working condition when you're doing critical driving. You need it to start first go and not stop until you tell it to, and you need all functions to be working correctly. You'll really learn what's wrong and what's not real quick.

The bad:

One of my mates decided he would drive his Valiant for a few months while he saves up for a new daily. Worst idea ever! Absolute pain in the back side. couldn't park it anywhere, slow as anything, no A/C, no power steer, loud as hell and not to mention its apatite for fuel. He soon sold it and used all the money on a new car.

I drove my VL as a daily for about 2 years until 2005. Up until the start of this year it mainly sat under the car port with a few drives per year. Now that I have moved I use every day, but it will be getting sold soon for a newer car.

It's a good car for a daily, but some luxuries like power steering and air con I wish it did have.

Jumping in it after sitting outside in a 30+ degree day is not nice.

So long as it has some street manners you won't have a problem. If they were daily drivers 20 or 30 years ago no reason why they still can't be. I drive my XB everywhere and it negotiates heavy traffic on Hoddle street nearly every day.. Its a pleasure to drive with black velour seats and power steering. The angry clevo is the icing on the cake! I am even thinking about making my XA coupe a daily driver - anyone out there game enough to use their coupe as a daily??

I used my a HX Kingswood as a daily for a while.

No aircon was the main thing that drove me insane and the fear of some idiot running into which is ultimately what happened and wrote it off. Really A/C was the only thing I missed and it leaked on really rainy days.

Now my weekend car these days is fine as a daily, has aircon and power steer in fact I use it when Im worried about getting damage to the FG, I generally just try and keep the klms down cause the XF drinks a lot of fuel.

Some of the other good points. The car is gas research so the fuel issue should be fine. It has power steering but in a car like the XC it might handle a bit like a boat.

Is there a difference though in someone spending 40grand on a new xr6t or someone spending 40k to due up a classic?

My MK2 Escort was my daily for about 4 months - loved every minute of it until I ran up someones *** and wrote the poor baby off. 32yr old brakes aren't very safe.

My car has all brand new running gear. Thats why im flirting with the idea of using it as a daily. The car is litterally a xr6 t hiding under an XC shell.

I might keep the rough daily while i try it out for abit. Incase i change my mind.

is it reliable - seems the answer is yes
do you care if it gets the little bits of damage that most dailys tend to get, stone chips, car park dints etc.
is your insurance cover based on limited use?
is it a cop magnet, and will a defect make your life horrible?

My opinion, If I had spent 40g on a classic, I would probably drive it all the time (that is with new running gear). Just get aircon and she's apples

But if it was, no offence, but a rarer car, and you spent 40g, I would keep it as the weekender.

I love seeing oldies being driven like they were built to...

None taken mate... The XC isn't high on the collectors list YET! Im not driving in the city either which is plus.

I drove my ESP as a daily for about 3 years. It did it more harm than good.

Cam chewed a lobe from idling in traffic for so long (BIG cam), all kinds of trims and moulds went missing from the exterior, got small dints and scratches that are probably not obviuos but I know they are there. etc etc. It just didn't like it. Luckily it got a mini resto once it no longer was a daily.

Main thing I worry about when driving older cars as dailys is RUST.

My ute is parked outside all the time and I can hear it rusting lol.

Club reg doesn't give me enough driving time. And the time they do get doesn't really work well with my job (shift work).

Club rego is also for cars that are standard or with limited period modifications

that depends on the clubs rule.... find a club that allows any mods to the car and join up. Thats the whole idea...

I suppose it depends on which state your in aswell.

In NSW we had a guy in the club im in have a turbo & mechanical fuel injection on a 1600 escort.

The modifications that were documented with period advertisements from magazines showing that it could be done back then.

Someone complained from outside the club & he had to have them removed or the club faced loosing its ability to issue club registraton

I think in Victoria its different because there are some pretty modded cars down there on club reg.

I use either of my AMC Javelins (RHD '69 and a LHD '74) or my club rego'd motorbikes (GS550, GS750, GPZ750R1) for daily duties .. based on an elaborate set of criteria:
Can't be too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, I can't be too early or too late (i.e. it's dark .. kangaroos!!), can't be too far, etc, etc, etc ...
Basically I'll drive to/from work on nice days and under "known" conditions. Whenever it's doubtful, I'll just jump in the SV8, crank up the heater or A/C and just park it anywhere.
If you love your weekender, you'll miss your daily and the sacrifices it makes ..

theres a guy locally who drives his restored 56 customline to work everyday - but he has a safe place to park it at work where some tool cant' damage it. If it were me, it would all depend on where it would be parked most of the day. If you go to the shops a lot, forget it. The bumps and scrapes will drive you nuts

motorbike? Its what i did. Got sick of the door dints in my car while its only an xr6t and they are everywhere with the money Ive spent on it every scratch hurts so i bought a cheap Korean bike which costs me about 15 bucks to fill every 6 weeks i Dont pay for parking less km's on my pride and joy and less scratches and costs me 200 bucks rego for a year

I like the idea of getting into something special for when I actually want to drive, so I keep my ED just for weekends or special occasions.

I like the feeling of getting into something and having to concentrate and pilot the car, monitor gauges turn, things on and off to ensure it stays operational.

Id keep it for weekends, is the price of rego worth the heartache if something happens?

i drive my xr falcon van every day and it gets used as a commercial vehicle
and the missus drives the 56 olds complete with baby seat and the yound fella.

have driven only old cars for the last 7 years and i would never go back to a new car.
