today I had about a tonne of wood in the back of my ute, and that makes the front feel very light and swervy, as well as not being able to brake well as it doesnt put the weight over the front wheels. 23 people must weigh near 1.5 to 2 tonnes so a little swerve could easily be overcorrected and end in disaster.

I have had my ute a bit overloaded before (at least the weight is not where its meant to be!), with 10 railway sleepers hanging out the back by about a metre, leaving the front pretty weightless! And you really have to tip toe along! I could imagine if I had to swerve for something at 100 I would be rolling guaranteed! |

AU doesn't have borders like we do (we have areas of legal crossings but the rest of the border is more like an imaginary line in the desert between our side and the other side), your illegal immigrants mostly get there by boat or overstay their VISAs right? We have some boat people too, but basically our illegals make their mad dash across borders to get to our side. Or use underground tunnels that open up into warehouses near the border, it's ridiculous. And it's a business for some.
Illegal immigration is a hot and controversial topic here. Our border patrol is taxed and stretched thin, there's no human way possible to protect our borders that stretch across many states, not to mention the terrain there. Whenever I'm in Los Angeles (Southern Cal) I noticed that English isn't the first language there. It's been like that for awhile now. Everywhere I went I heard Spanish, from Disneyland to grocery stores to specialty shops. Illegal immigrants say they have rights and expect government help, education and medical. *I feel sorry for those who died..... but there are legal ways of coming into the US. Yeah I highly suspect the baby in the bucket is photoshopped but I think the 8 on the bike are real.

The most I ever personally saw on a bike was 6 in Pakistan... by the time the camera was ready I couldn't get the shot... 4 is the norm in a lot of Asia as the family can't afford a car.
I have seen a lot of bad accidents while in Africa and Asia... they don't really go out of their way to cover the scene either. After seeing the way they overload ANY mode of transport any type of accident will be bad... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsrbSoO01D4 I don't know... if I were trying to get into a country under the radar it would be in a van, not piled 4 deep and 3 high on the back of an open ute...

That's a good idea... Load up 23 people in a vehicle that's supposed to carry no more than 5 (in this case 3). What could possibly go wrong???
Reminds me of a video of Bathurst I saw on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhvCyIEDRSA |

Back in 1983 we were despatched to a vehicle accident - single vehicle rollover just outside of Jabiru (Kakadu National Park). When we turned up there were two in the front and three in the back of the vehicle (five injured). Whilst we were treating those five, a further twelve (12) walked / hobbled /were carried out of the surrounding bushes. Fifteen (15) adults and two (2) children in a Troop Carrier.
A few had the odd broken bone, cuts and grazes but that was it. It took us two trips back to the health centre with the Police using the cage to also help carry the injured. The vehicle simply fell over going around a 90' corner at about 25 kmph.
