I bought a second hand car book, all about the car ,how it works, its maintenances and repair. Turning to the body repair section i couldn't believe my eye when i saw how they recommended to deal with rust. For extensive rust you are supposed to grind the paint off, bash it in, fill with chicken wire, them bog it up. I think we have all heard of these sort of dodgy repairs being done, but to see it printed in a book as being the way to do it is unbelievable.
The book was printed in 1970, but surely this wouldn't have been acceptable back then. |

Absolutely, have done that sort of thing on many busted- daily drivers just to pass inspections. Obviously wouldn't use it on something I intend to keep though.
Hot tip: If you use coke cans filled with iron filings and then bashed flat, a magnet will stick to it. Good as new! NH

Haaaaa..
I have a book running round that uses a method for correcting slight dents by shrinking and expanding the panel using heat and cold. One of the pictures has a guy using wads of asbestos fibres soaked in water for the 'cooling' part. Heating was with a blow torch. |

That method has to be better than what a mate of mine did to fix his rust,he filled the sills with cement,he trowelled it off nicely then painted it with a brush

my first car - an XW sedan , had sills filled with about 10 sydney morning heralds with the holes expertly covered with duct tape before the bog over .
they had done a real good job too. car was only 11 years old when i bought it and already rusted.
