Was sitting at the lights waiting to do a U-Turn. Police were on the opposite side waiting to do a right hand turn. Traffic cleared, I made my you turn, Police put on the "Angry" lights and booked me for doing a U-Turn without a sign saying so !! Is this common knowledge or have I been living under a rock ?

Common knowledge Buggerlugs.
Doing a U turn at traffic lights has always been illegal. It's only in recent years that they have allowed it at some lights providing it is signed. It's one of the things that always ****ed me off living in a city with high tourist numbers. Used to get very dangerous. |

Yup. Been done for that myself.
Unfortunately no one was around (or so I thought) and a HWP car must of come in view of the intersection whilst I was mid U-Turn. Saw him gun it after me, and I got done. Ah well, what can you do.

i got done about 15yrs ago here in adelaide. it was about 2am. i knew it was illegal but given the time, i took a chance. i thought i was the only car on the road, did a U-turn and pulled in to a servo. hopped out and there's a cop car pulling in behind me. it was like - 'where did he come from??' we both knew i'd done the wrong thing so it was a fairly short exchange. i still have no idea where he came from.... i guess i was tired and the roads weren't as empty as i thought. live and learn. |

No, I just looked it up. It's 2 points. Called in and asked the local copper ( who was actually at the station- Normally he's found at Subway) and he thought it was nothing, then come back with 2 points. So I just checked on line. Looks like I'll be getting another letter from the Government telling me I have bugger all points. Now LG , I don't have this problem when out the bush eh !!

That's weird we are specifically allowed unless a sign said no u turns permitted.
Stupid the inconsistencies across states |

you won't get booked in Victoria for doing a U turn at traffic lights unless there is a sign forbidding U turns, which isn't very often

Yep, got done years ago while in Brisy as a young bloke visiting for Expo '88.
Got lost, so pulled a Uey and bing, police car behind me in a flash. I explained the situation, and that I was from out of town (as my licence subsequently proved), and he said to go back & do another one as I was already heading the right way to get back home..... I got booked for the first, the second was a freebie! Ed

This is news to me I thought you couldn't chuck them at specifically marked intersections with no u turn permitted indicated?
I'm pretty sure here in Vic you can do U-turns at intersections but just not at ones specifically signed not permitted. Last edited by Franco Cozzo; 30-04-2015 at 08:20 PM. |

I wonder if the traffic light signals are different in victoria. There is a post a little up this page about someone doing a U turn (illegally in QLD) nearly hitting a car with a turn left arrow. I've had that happen to me too.

This is the problem with people who got their licence by driving round the block with the local copper who plays on their old man's cricket team.
You can tell me about experience all you like, but without knowledge of the proper road rules, problems occur. Not having a go at you in particular buggerlugs, just a general observation.

people learn to drive by the road rules applicable to their state mostly. ignorance isn't an excuse, i know, but why make things harder than they need to be? road rules do get revisited from time to time, and changes get made and its up to the individual to make sure they are up to date. sometimes these changes aren't that widely publicised to the greater population. |

And for those older members, you can go into a Transport office and get a paper copy. I have no sympathy for this type of thing. Its your responsibility to know the current road rules, not just drive blindly into the night. If you do not wish to learn the rules, then catch a bus |
