Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice please. Went and talked to someone about getting my exhaust sounding a little gutsier. First thing he suggested was removal of the resonator and replacing it with a flange as a basic, reversable step. Does that sound right? So has anyone done this to their VCT and what do you think of the result? I don't want it to sound like some tarted up Honda coupe. Does removing this allow it to breathe a bit better also? Since it is at the rear of the car, will the droning be kept to a minimum from inside the cabin? Thanks, Andrew.

A resinator as appropriately named is designed with one function in mind and thats to stop unwanted resonating....i have a complete exhaust system on my au with vct and it has a resonator installed to keep out that harsh unwanted in cab noise. if your only looking for a bit more growl and a cheap way out my suggestion would be to replace the main mufler while keeping the resonator..

So aftermarket muffler then? Okay thanks, will look into that. Sounds like removing the resonator won't be a pleasant experience. Someone else told me it'd get annoying and I think maybe people wouldn't wanna be driven in it anymore coz of headaches, hehe.

I agree.. new muffler, keep the resonator. I would never consider taking mine off.. it is bad enough as it is.

yep leave the rear resonator alone, just get the centre muffler cut out and replaced with a Lukey/Magnaflow.....the resonator keeps the drown out of the car.
With the XR8 I put 18" hotdogs but left the the rest stock, got that tough sound I wanted without the sound inside.

Thanks for the advice. Interestingly, the guy who looked at my exhaust said it is a 2.25" system and not the 2.5" that I thought JMM had installed as part of their DEV 1 pack. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

dauphin i have 2.5" press bent and the twin tips on the rear.. with only a single muffler under hte middle of the car.. no resonators or anything..
and it sounds **** HOT!! not TOO loud... not soft .. and totally different to your normal falcon auto.. it also pops and crackles when held in say 1st when you let off the accelerator off at high revs!! its awesome all my mates think it sounds wicked!! and i have hardly any resonance when cruising at any speed you wont regret it dauphin.. i think ours are slightly differnt to the falcons..

Ive kinda got the same setup as you on my intech6.
pacemakers > no catconverter atm (im getting a hiflo - jus to help the environment) > through a 2.5 mandrel > to a lukey glass pack > to single tip. and i get very little resonance at cruising speed. high revs sound decent. i still wish it sounded like an eight... :( James |

Hmm, so Blackers - you had your resonator removed then? So it would involve:
- removal of resonator and replacement with a flange - removal of a muffler - does another flange go in there? - existing large single tip removed and new twin tip welded on (like the LTD yes?) I am quite impressed by your Fairlane's sound but I'm unsure if I want to go that far. So by press-bent do you mean it is just bending the pipe, not a full mandrel bend where it retains its same diameter around the bend? That might make a difference in how it sounds as a result, may be negative or positive.

i never had the resonator on my aftermarket system.. just the single muffler
press bent is the one where the inner edge is squashed in to make the bend.. it definatly flows better than stock.. but dont know how much of a difference it makes overall.. being its never been on a dyno etc.. it still beats VQ statesman 5ltrs on the highway uve seen my twin tips..i dont see why you would need twin tips tho for the sound.. its just the end (last 4" or so of pipe thats separate) if you get it flanged they can bolt a resonator straight back in if you dont like it or if you get old and dont like the noise you can drop another muffler in

Press bent often has a better sound than mandrel bent, giving more crackling etc. But we all know that mandrel is better for flow.
