phoned around for a couple of insurance quotes today, and some of the responses were stunning to say the least....
RACQ: "sorry sir, we cannot insure your vehicle with an exhaust larger than a single 2.5" ok...... ask what happens if i put the original exhaust on...... "because your car is a V8 there will be an extra $400 high performance vehicle excess because parts are harder to get for them" (someone wanna tell her there are more intake manifold options for a windsor than the entire go-fast parts list for an EA-EL I6?) "the yearly insurance premium will be $784.95" hmm..... not too bad, tho its retarded that i have to go back to the stock exhaust just to get insurance....... Suncorp: "the yearly insurance premium will be $1476" Me: "cough, choke, splutter, snigger, laughing..... you're kidding, right?" Suncorp: "no sir, why?" Me: "theres no way you can do better than that?" Suncorp: "well sir, to let you enjoy the benefit of insuring with us, we can take your good driving history into account, and the premium will drop to $1100-ish" Me: "still not good enough" Suncorp: "sorry sir, thats the best we can do..... would you like to discuss home and contents insurance?" Me: "considering how much you want to charge for insurance on my car, i'm not gonna let myself get ripped off on my home and contents insurance" Shannons: "we can insure your car provided its kept under a carport for $611" guess who i'm waiting for paperwork from..............

Yeah, sometimes I think insurance companys adjust thier rates to suit the current air density pressures.. There are different stories from every company.. Its luck of the draw on the day I reckon.

IMO there is a certain point when you have to think whether or not the insurance costs are worth it. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't have insurance, but maybe the timing is not right with for the car and you. My car, all mods, $650 full comp with agree value. And yeap, its Shannons. Hell they threw my GF on the policy at no extra cost (limited driving). Both of us are under 25 aswell. Very happy.

I had my 2002 WH statesman 5.7 insured comprehensively for $992 a year when I was 21 ( one and a half years ago). I currently pay $100 more for a 12 year old Xr8 with a third less power. Excesses are high, but at least I am covered. Both cars are insured with Just Car.

Shannons didn't have an issue insuring me. I took out the policy when I was under 25 and they know about ALL the mods and the fact that I don't have a garage and that it is a daily driver.
"Oh your a member of FF.com.au, you must take part in some events then. That classes you as an enthusiast so we'd be happy to insure you. That'll be $880 a year."

I love the GIO one. Where they advertised "If your parents are insured with us, you get 60% off your comprehensive...
To bad they wanted to charge me $3500 for a Stock I6 AU3 and I have no bad driving history....

Yeah, i've heard good and bad things about shannons. They sound good if you can get insurance with them.
I called today and they won't insure me. Suppose a 20yo daily driver might be a bit hard for them to justify. Even though i mention i'm a member here and on aufalcon.com Oh, and rugger atm i'm going onto a rating 3 for insurance, quotes are aami - 850ish Just car - 1098 RACV - 1423 Shannons - No Dice Vigil - waiting to hear back GIO - waiting to hear back So not bad, just can't modifiy it at all Cheers

Before I bought the Ghia, I wanted a 2002 WRX ... being only 19 at the time, I had the funding, but - The $4300 Per year somewhat didn't justify a WRX. Absolute joke!

Insurance for my trucks is $500, excess of $500. I drive these EVERY DAY ALL DAY.
Insurance for my v8 ba Ghia was $1200, $1000 excess. Insurance on my F6 Tornado is $1600 with $1000 excess. I drive this car once a week, if that! I am 23 and had NO accidents. now can someone tell me what is going on there?!!! some of the guys here reckon we should all stop complaining etc, but the figures don't add up to me. I am very disheartened that Shannons won't entertain the thought of ensuring me, I am a motoring enthusiast and have been turned away EVERY time for every car, that age thing really gives me the shits! |

When WRX's first were released you could insure them for $500, but due to the high claims all insurer's increased their rates - FACT Alot of those claims were Mummy and Daddy's children who are such good drivers and would never have an accident PFTTTTTTTTT!! So insurer's started to EXCLUDE under 25 year old drivers

Not to be rude guys, but you brought your cars knowing that they are "hi-po" and regularly involved in accidents/thefts. We are all in the most expensive age bracket, what did you expect?
If you can afford it then by all means pay it and have fun, but even if I had the cash I would find it very difficult to justify spending anything near $2000pa for just insurance.

WTF? 2: wtf is with suncorp being more than twice the price of shannons? id've expected a boutique insurer such as shannons to be the expensive one..... however, i think i have every right to object to being quoted $1300 for full comp on an 1987 XF Fairmont Ghia.......

Insurance is a generalisation rob, and generally, under 25 males are big insurance risks.

Ok, my turn. The humble Festiva has a Metallic yellow finish with yellow pearl. Time for the insurance to renew. Called NRMA, wouldn't touch me. My paint was in the same category as those paint jobs that changed to every colour of the rainbow (Bublegum / Harlequin I think they were called??).
They kept trying to ask me trick questions, to see if I would contradict myself, so every time I was swapped from one person to another I answered the same questions about wheel width, exhaust and suspension etc etc etc. (My car is as it drove out of the dealership, bar the paint). I was only persistent caus they were a good $400 cheaper than my quote. For some reason, they just assumed that my car was a fully sick habib mobile.... (again kept answering same questions time and time again re modifications). Ok, I remember that Bankstown branch used to do inspections, and this was confirmed by the supervisor on the phone, and they would only insure me after a visual inspection. Fine by me. Drove to Bankstown, parked, went in to the NRMA branch. Waited in line. No one knew anything about my booking, in fact, they hadn't done inspections there for years! Starting to get angry now.... The nice lady behind the counter heard my story and told me I must have mis-understood. "Paint is NEVER an issue, I have organised insurance for a metallic pink car with white polka dots"..... She called away, was on the phone for 15 minutes. Got of the phone and said "Very sorry, we can't help you". (I guess by this time every supervisor / office manager at the call center knew about my car...) So there you go. HELP my ***. Happy to never consider NRMA again... Oh, and no-one else seemed to have an issue with the paint. As long as its noted. Hell, my car should get a DISCOUNT for insurance. It bloody glows in the dark it's so bright, (less chance of an accident) and no one would be so stupid as to steal it caus it sticks out like a sore thumb and any body parts would need to be re-painted as it's not standard. Cheers |

Not my car (I wish it was), but when Jeremy Clarkson rang up an insurance company to get a quote for a Bugatti Veyron and the guy on the other end of the line didn't even know what it was. I found that slightly funny.

BUT REMEMBER that NRMA Insurance is NOT the same company as NRMA Road Service. NRMA insurance is owned by Insurance Australia Group, who also owns CGU Insurance.

i'm 18, didn't have comprehensive on my old kingswood just ctp and fire/theft. cost 180/year.
bought a falcon ute, completely totally stock and prices ranged up to $2400 with suncorp. thayt dropped back to half (1200) when i had the sudden thought to mention my grandad is with them and has a no claim history. aami was $1100. comminsure and racq were about the 400 mark with dad as the owner (which he is, technically!) and me as a nominated driver as the vehicle. so yeah all over the shop. pays to ring around |

I recall doing a quote in 2004 for a 17 year old in Bankstown on a old TE Cortina valued at about $2000. The premium for comprehnsive after going through the quote was going to be more than $7000 a year.
I know how wrong this seems but what you need to keep in mind is that with some risks that a company does not want but cannot actually decline due to no grounds to do so. What they will do is price themselves out of the market and if the person does insure it is has collected a good enough premium to allow it.
