Default LR Front Footwell Lamps - what additional parts are needed?

I've recently been poking around under the dash of the LR for various reasons (see my recent posts), and this has led me to the installation of the footwell lamps. I've searched the threads on here, which do provide some information, but there seems to be something that I'm missing.

I've found the grey wedge bulb holders (connected to the loom) without any problems, and on the drivers side I've found the hole in the back of the little parcel shelf that the bulb holder connects to. However, on the passenger side I cannot for the life of me work out where the bulb holder is meant to attach to! At the moment, it is just dangling down, swinging in the breeze. In previous threads, people have mentioned ghia bulb covers and trim, is this what I need?

Someone also mentioned that after finding the bulb holder, they simply pushed out the pre-cut hole in the felt(?) underneath the glovebox, and attached the holder to that. Well, the only felt like material that is under my glovebox is my floor carpet! Am I missing something? Is there supposed to be a piece of trim that attaches between the bottom of the glovebox and the firewall? Because at the moment, if the passenger lifts their feet directly up, they will kick the heater blower.

I'm lost ... used:

It needs a clear plastic cover like the boot light. It is sound deading felt that has a pre cutout on it. I can take a photo if you want tomorrow?

Thanks for the fast response! If you wouldn't mind taking a photo, that would be great ... because I definately think I'm missing that felt! Does it sort of enclose the area between the bottom of the glovebox and the firewall?

Yep you just need the lens identical to that in the boot. The felt under the glovebox has a pre-cut into it that just pops out with a little force. Hey presto. Deadset easiet mod I ever did.

Hmmm, I think that settles it then ... I reckon we're missing the bit of felt under the glovebox, because it's just a big open space. Looks like I'm off to the dealers this weekend ...

On the passenger side, is that on the side towards the door?

I can feel a depression about the right size and think it has an edge so will possibly pop out

I gotta do this mod someday, but I can't see anything that suggests i have the wiring. I don't think i'm looking in the right place

Melbzetec, for me, I found the wiring (well, a bulb holder) taped up in that foam tape stuff. It was directly behind and below the glovebox, in about the centre. It was taped to another loom that runs across, near the heater fan.

As for the cut out to hold the lamp ... well, I'm pretty sure I'm missing something there.

Hang on, I'll run out and take a photo ...

Ok .. bring on mspaint!

Here is the general location;

And here is a close up of where it's attached. Note that I didn't remove any felt or remove anything to see this. So yes, I have that bulb just dangling down at the moment ... classy.

Well, that is very weird ... the last owner (who only had it for 16,000km) was a perfectionist. Nothing was out of place on the car. The felt certainly hasn't gone missing whilst we've had it, so I wonder where it went!

Oh well, hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg from Ford ...

Well found the passenger side one and the rectangle that pops out this morning. How pathetically easy was that!!!!! Just got to know what you're looking for. You were right Matt. Easiest mod ever.

Just need time to check the other side, and get soem lamp holders.

What size globe do you put in Adam? I assume a wedge style bulb of some description.

5w wedge base bulb, you can put in the indicator/repeater sized one, or a slightly larger 12w one I think. I have large ones in there to give more light. Cheapest mod ever too. So easy it's almost criminal they weren't in there to begin with.

the one on the drivers side is on the right hand side of the footwell right up the top of the kick panel, just above the box thing which i can only assume is the ECU or some part of the immobiliser.

Anyone know if the lenses are expensive through ford or am i better off going rummaging through the wreckers. If that's the case there's bound to be similar parts on a mondeo or something, coz i can never find focus's at the wreckers around me.

Also, I wonder if you can get the bulbs in colours. Kinda rice burner i know, but I'd like to change the colour of my dash lights and i thought it might tie them in.

I saw blue wedge bulbs at Ricerbarn today.

I think I also saw on ebay at some stage little coloured covers that can go over bulbs. And I'm sure you could get soem LED's to fit.

So the drivers side is up above the ECU then?

yup, you basically have to lay upside down on the seat to get to it. I'm impressed i know something you don't!, bet that doesn't happen too often. i only knew it was there because i went looking for it after reading this thread.

And I'm not quite sure where i get this affection for rice-like stuff like those lights either. I mean i absolutely loath Hondas. More than i hate light beer!.

Bulbs in colour on fleabay.

Lens is ridiculously cheap, not even $5 from memory. It clicks into place and has the holder for the bulb holder too. Awesome.

When I first did it I had blue LED's in the footwells and blue central roof LED ligh. It looked a bit too ricer, so I went for cool white LED's all round and it looked tits. Now it's just back to normal for sean but he has most of the bulbs to do it again should he wish.

Is there a place for the bulb holder to pop into on the drivers side?

Yeah, on the shelf that you remove - the kick panel under the steering wheel has the holder in it.

Once it's done, you'll swear out loud why the hell they saved the 5 cents per bulb when it adds so much to the car! frochrissake it's all there already LITERALLY!!

went to ford and ordered the lenses. the part number is 13776D for those interested. $11.00 each too, they might be dearer here in sydney because they've gotta come up from melbourne... just like every other damn thing I've bought for this car.

Also went to ricerbarn for the globes, I'm too impatient for ebay. Had a bit of a laugh to myself though, when i asked the dude at the counter for some interior light globes he asked almost instantly 'what colour'.... i then meekily asked for blue.

I swear, i've never owned a WRX!!

**UPDATE**
took me all of 20 mins to put in. I took pics for those who want to know exactly were it all is.

Also, i realised i only need one lens. i ordered two. if anyone wants the other one PM me.

Passenger side

Take out those three screws and pull out the plastic tabs they screw into.
Pull the felt cover down and chuck it out of your way.
the bulb holder is on the far left hand side under the dash. It's grey in colour and is wrapped in grey foam. Pull the foam off it and plug the bulb in.

*note* if you use LED bulbs, they are polarity sensitive. In non geek-speak it means they have a possitive and negative side. Test them, and if they don't work, unplug them and turn them around.

I haven't received the lenses yet so i'll just guess the next bit.

Now, go and retrieve the felt cover from wherever you threw it earlier and look at the back side of it, you'll notice a rectangle in it. Push that rectangle out, you wont even need a knife!
Pull the bulb holder through the hole and attatch it to the lens holder then push the whole thing back into the hole.

reinstall the felt cover and you're done!.

Drivers side

This requires a little more work.

undo those five screws and pull the kick panel out.

**ATTN: STEVE!!!!** I fibbed when i told you where the bulb holder on the drivers side is. That plug is for something else!.

That's the bulb holder there. You'll need to cut the foam away carefully.
Once it's free of it's sticky foam captor plug the bulb into it.

The bulb holder goes in that hole there. Just push it in and twist it gently.

Put the kick panel back in and you'll have footwell lamps.

Very good photos there...Your car could do with a good wipe down of the dust in there. Also a set of ST170 alloy pedals will set your car off beautifully.
