C'mon sounds like a great opportunity to serve the equivalent of an apprenticeship working on cars - thought that would be a dream for most young guys. Without doubt you'd have to be shkicker first to prove you deserve and are ready to take the step up and you could be working on GTs and get a rep for your work eventually. Would you let just any old 16yo to work on your GT?

Go work at Maccas instead, I hear they have a great management trainee program and you get to work with chicks too.

Money is only so important, skills are highly underrated as is experience. A seal on a certificate hanging behind your desk doesn't make you an expert, the proof is in the brag book of jobs done, or the referal from someone I trust.

Why is a 16 year old automatically a rat bag ? And whats wrong with one helping out on a full resto anyway ? Im not sure it matters how old you are. Even if they are only helping to strip a car down for starters.

Rookie plumber burns down historic mansion

A 17-YEAR-old rookie plumber has burned down a £5 million ($12 million) waterside mansion in southwest England, after a soldering task during his first day on the job went horribly wrong.

The historic mansion in Kingswear, Devon, was undergoing a £2 million renovation when a fire ripped through the eight-bedroom house overnight.

In just minutes it burned it down to the ground.

It is thought the fire started after polystyrene insulation caught alight from the flame of a blow torch.
The plumber was working for a firm of sub-contractors.

John Howes, of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said the plumber was "very upset", according to the Daily Mail newspaper.

"It appears at this stage that this was an unfortunate plumber who was soldering in the roof space of a large building, which was undergoing total renovation".

"We think a blowtorch may have set light to expanded polystyrene foam in the roof space"

More than 60 firefighters were called to the listed building to fight the blaze.

No one was hurt.

One neighbour said: "I heard it was started by a teenager on his first day. You have to feel sorry for the poor lad. He must feel terrible," the Daily Mail said.

Apparently the millionaire owner, Andrew Brownsword, wasn't very happy either. But his spokesman said Mr Brownsword believed there was no malice involved.

On the other hand, I have several young employees who just go off and do things they are not supposed to or are not trained in, can NOT be told not to do things, get VERY upset when told that as a 6 month trainee they are not as experienced and a 20 year tech.

Why are all the young people of today so sure the are experts and know everything?

Ah of course, why didn't I think of that. All you have to do is give a young inexperienced untrained knowall smartarse lots of money and they are instantly an experienced trained reliable professional.

Sure beats the old way of actually being trained and learning how to do the job through hands on experience in many and varied situations over many years.

Yes that happens,I had one very recently,who was more interested in arguing which apprentice should do what job,the one who was the second year,or the one who was older.
You will find people like this in all walks of life,not just the young,its human nature,so do we just write them all off?

The apprentice I mentioned above couldnt be helped,hes moved on,but for every one like this I get 3 that with some patience and sometimes a big stick make great reliable tradesmen,that learn their trade well enough to work anywhere in the world..

Sometimes we need to step back and look at things once removed,and not with our own selfish short term motives,

I was taught by a true master in my field,who was 60 when he took me on,the aspects of my trade I learnt are seldom seen now,but have resulted in me working in some fascinating places,and for great money,
also learned was that I have a responsibility to pass that on,the trade and the work ethic,nobody is going to become rich off an apprentice/trainee,but teach a good one the right way and they will make you a packet in a few years..

There are no lazy apprentices just lazy teachers..

To all the old boys having a little rant. Most of the older generation come from "the baby boomer generation". Now if I look back to the 60's and 70's, what do I find mmmmmmm hippies and slackers. The youth of today are no different to the youth of your day the only thing thats changed is YOU!

good way to learn the art of restoration from a master.Ive known Neil for years we went to high school together and pop in regularly to his workshop ,all his work is spot on and thats why he is one of the best in the game,Good work dont come CHEAP!!!!!!!!
