Two young men have been charged with throwing lemons at the windscreen of a petrol tanker, causing it to nearly crash in the NSW Hunter. Police say a group of males were hiding in the bushes when they pummelled the cabin of the truck on the New England Highway, at Singleton, about 10.50pm (AEST) on Saturday. The lemons allegedly struck the windscreen and shattered the glass, causing the driver to brake heavily and the tanker to skid for approximately 40 metres before coming to a stop. The 58-year-old driver contacted police who located three males hiding in the bushes. Police arrested two 18-year-old men after a foot pursuit while the third male got away. The pair were charged over the incident and granted bail to appear in Singleton Local Court on October 14. Police are continuing their investigations to locate the third male believed to be involved in the incident

Lock them in a room of about 5-6 truck drivers, I'm sure they can hand out a fitting punishment

Sick to XXXXing death of hearing this sort of Crap . Send a REAL message , Gaol them for 10 Years Minimum for the first offence then LIFE ( as in never to be released ) for the second . This is nothing short of attempted murder and most probably mass murder .Why should it take them killing innocent people before any half arsed punishment starts to be levied .

It was just lucky that the driver didn’t hit any other vehicles or kill himself. It 100 KM/H, a lemon would have the same impact as a rock. In my opinion, this is attempted murder.

How incredibly intelligent of them to use something as innocuous as lemons to achieve their goal, making themselves seem to be simple idiots. That screams evil international masterminds to me, worthy of even more severe treatment.

If any person chooses to be this thoughtless, their life would most probably be worth nothing in the eyes of the rest of the community. This might sound extreme, however, I'd take it one step higher and say they deserve nothing but death. Seeing as the money wasted to keep them contained is not even worth others and essentially the people put at risk, forking out for only to have those guilty strike again some day, upon release (Granted, they would be older, but wiser? Hardly. They're still the same person/people they were before serving time). |

Annoyingly, I'll bet that the law won't allow for these criminals to be charged with anything anywhere near serious enough.
We hear about this sort of thing way too often, and not punishing it severely sends the message to kids that it's just mischief. It's not!!! People can easily be killed!!! I can remember walking home from a party once with some mates. We were in our late teens and had been drinking. Two of them got the bright idea that it would be funny to remove a storm grate, leaving a hole in the side of the road big enough to swallow a wheel completely. Luckily a couple of us had enough sense to see the potential outcome and replaced it immediately. We asked them WTF they were thinking, and they honestly weren't able to connect the dots and realise they were risking lives. Some people just can't link action and consequence. I don't think it's because they are that stupid (doesn't take any more brain power than breathing to realise what could happen), I think it's because they just can't be bothered thinking through anything. An idea pops into their head and they act on it, without any thought of possible outcomes. Maybe a good long goal term will help fix that attitude (hope they are given the extra slippery soap).

Will have to have a look at it, but I think a new law was brought in in NSW to deal with this bull.... , I think enacted after that poor girl from down the south coast had the Astra she was travelling in hit at Kiama.
And of course the Mark Evans tragedy near Menangle. The Kiama incident offender was a 30-35 year old from memory, and I think he may have had kids, these were not kids either - but young adults too. These are not kids, and I don't think it is much of a stretch to call them terrorists. I double check when driving under underpasses these days, especially when I only have a fabric or glass roof. Throwing missiles at a petrol tanker - not hard to figure out the intent there. There you go your Honour, mens rea proven. Guilty.

Please forgive me for this...
Doctor Watson: "So, what caused the accident in the first place?" Sherlock Holmes: "Lemon entry, dear Watson" Now, serious time. They intended at the very minimum to frighten, at the very maximum, to kill and provide a spectacle for their own amusement. The Jackass generation have a lot to learn. I agree: attempted murder should be the charge. Shazz

Bring back the stocks. Public humiliation and shame in their local community. Wheel the stocks right under some of the bat infested trees in Burdekin Park and then let their local community throw lemons at them.

Cut their effing hands off! These clowns have no understanding what the consequences of a tanker fire could do. It's not uncommon for a tanker fire to kill hundreds of people in a bad accident.
