Just a quick one for the more technically minded:-
I have had a mate remove an old hard drive from my old laptop and I wish to extract the data from it and put it on our new computer. I am told I need an IDE cable with a USB end on it so I can plug it in, however I am not sure whether I would need to provide power to the harddrive before I could see and remove the data. My limited knowledge tells me that the USB connection should power the harddrive, is this correct? This is the cable I am looking at, I dont need anything flash as it will be a once off job. Once the data has been taken off it I will be binning the old HD. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-2-0-SATA-...item2c539d39a5 Thanks in advance for any advice

That link should give you everything to do it. But it being a 2.5" the USB should be enough to power it.

You could buy something like this
Silver 2.5in HDD External Enclosure, Aluminium, USB2.0, for IDE drives MIT-HD25-U2 Listed in the above site. This means you can keep the drive as a backup, and it just plugs into the USB. Turns it into an external hard drive. I use these on all older hard drives. |
