OK, so just for a bit of fun, I was wondering what people would think is the BEST car on the market you could get for $10,990 or less, the price of a brand new Cherry J1.
Now, of coarse you will take into account the normal things, safety, POWER, handling, looks, reliability, fuel economy, km's, age etc.... - MY OPINION: A few cars came to mind, Good EL XR8, not so good AU XR8, BA XR6.... But (don't shoot me) the best I could think of overall would have to be a 1999 Impreza WRX, 4 star ancap, turbo, sub 6s 0-100, good handling and decent fuel economy. And a good example one with lowISH km's could be had for the price of a Cherry J1.... - Look foward to hearing what people think

A couple year old Hyundai Getz. If you are looking at a Chery J1 then this is all you need in a car, and would still have some new car warranty left. Is safe, practical, reliable, great fuel economy and no doubt low kms. Cant go wrong.

The idea is more, as motoring enthusiests, what would WE prefer to buy for the money of a Cherry J1... As I have high doubt that there is anyone on this forum that would want one.

Ford: AU Fairmont Ghia VCT or XR6 VCT (depends on whether you have conservative taste or not, should be around the same price)
Non-Ford: E39 BMW 530i (great handling car, good steering feel, smooth inline six, gorgeous, albeit conservative, styling)

Heaps of cars to choose from for the price, you need to work out what you really want and what you can do without
A couple of examples http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/TO...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/MA...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/VO...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/VO...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/HO...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/MI...specifications http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/FO...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/FO...946139619&pt=1 http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/SU...946139619&pt=1 The list goes on and on, do you want power ? do you want economy ? do you want plenty of room ? cheap service costs ? etc...etc... |

Bought for my wife a BMW 535i for $10,900, a 1998 model with 150k black with tan leather interior.
This thing drives like a new car, has plenty of go from the baby V8, is reasonably economicle with about 12litres per 100k's & has driver, passenger & side airbags. A pleasure to drive, now I've just got to convince her my Laser needs upgrading

Capable of 0-100 in 6.8s stock and comes with leather, automatic xenon headlights, climate control, ESP cruise control, auto wipers etc etc. A car that quick, that handles that well, that has all that kit inside and is not more than 7 years old?? No brainer really. |

Well it depends what you are after … if its safety and comfort then many large cars would fit your bill …
If only performance is what you are after then you can’t go past numerous Japanese imports that are out there these days … A mate of mine recently sold his GTS-T for about that money, the car easily ran low 12second quarters with relatively standard skyline mods and old worn tyres … was cheap to run and never had issues … |

Hmm. Things I would rather drive than a Cherri.
Let me think about it. How about this.

Depends on what size we are talking about.
You cannot go past a low k clean AU XR for that money, actually you could get a really good XR6 S3 for $8k or less. Maybe find a VCT if you can handle a little more fuel usage but IIRC you get IRS. I was always a fan on the Mondeo ST220 that we got, nice interior, smooth V6, manual and I like the look of them. Parts could be a bugger though. Smaller again I agree, those little Renault Clio sports are a good car, light blue with the white stripes. Although I have always wanted one of these, regardless of FWD, reckon you could get it for $10k flat. http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...1591&silo=1011 |

Id go with a clean tidy R33 Skyline GTS-T.
Otherwise a good AU XR6 or a TJ Magna VRX.

I can tell you that I would prefer an XJS, WRX, R33 or any falcon over a Cherry.

I could get me another manual AU3 XR8 for $10990, and Id be as happy as a pig in you know what. Best bang for bucks car around IMHO.
Those turbo Scooby Doos might be fast and cheap, but their expensive to fix, especially if the engine or turbos worn out, and then theres the matter of insurance for cars like that. Very costly if your under 25..
