Cool holden ss $41990 driveaway? not a bad buy?

Latest holden ads for ss at $41990. Not a bad buy is it.

That's a pretty decent car for the money. What does Ford offer in that space? Xr6t is a little more expensive and not a v8. Our entry v8 will be mid to high $50s.

Leaves the ss with no competition at that price and a tempting buy. Spend a few thousand on it, cams, tune and exhaust and the big 6litre would keep the coyote very honest.

Your thoughts?

I agree. Hulk I know you are a great car enthusiast and love discussing them at length, but even this thread has me stumped as to why you started it.

Audi A5. Great car for it's price range. The only time I would discuss it with anyone though on pricing and features is when I am thinking of buying one!

I dont wanna have to buy one but at that price my arm is being twisted. i struggle to see what i get from ford for that money which will compare.

Sure id love a boss 335 gt but im just not willing to part with $70k.

in isolation, ss represents good buying, a big thumping 6l v8 in a nice looking package at tjat price. whats the driveaway on a xr6t? (closest competitor)

You might have to finance it thought.. Do you really want to do that after your last thread about people putting too much of their wealth into cars.

I spent years driving VE SSV's and the SS is the same thing less some of the fruit. I think you have it completely wrong.

The SS is not a patch on my GT. Is it 1.5 times a discounted SS? Easily.

The FG It's smoother, quieter, has a nicer interior, The VE interior is full of hard cheap plastic, horrible red gauges, especially the stupid oil pressure/voltage gauges that don't dim. Try that on a 5 hour night drive. The VE doesn't even have a split fold seat, a falcon feature since the 80's.

The 6.0 isn't a bad motor at all, but it wont keep up with an XR6T let alone a coyote. As for the transmission in the SS is awful, the ZF world class.

The VE points into a corner well but all 5 I had (company cars) suffered from axle tramp under hard acceleration. Not good.

Finally my stock 335 can chase down a C63. Good luck doing that in your el cheapo VE.

Better buying than a SS would be an ex demo GS for late 40's

Hulk old buddy, it's your money, and you get what you pay for. As the saying goes "If you cant afford a Ford, rev a chev"

Keep a coyote honest with 6k thrown at it? Doubt that. You've seen what the ford v8 with less than that can do, I doubt the SS really has a chance unless you throw serious dollars at it.
And also, unlike others here I can see why you made this thread. The sharp pricing of the SS is something that people would want to know about. However when you consider what is available from ford for only a few k more, the ford offering looks better. GS with a tune will destroy an SS with 6k thrown at it. Especially if it has the ZF!

Is the 41k price on SS totally a base SS with sluggish 6spd auto? No leather, reverse camera, premium sound, etc?

nothing the matter with them , it`s just choice, personally i wouldn`t pass up the opportunity to have a factory built supercharged qaud cam v8 in a sporty sporty family sedan for only a few thousand more(if i had the cash), that and the commy styling is to in your face for me , but again that`s personal choice..............actually i had a drive of a supercharged qaud cam v8 a couple of days ago ....... I LIKE THAT FEELING.

I don't mind thr styling of the SS to be honest, they look ok with a nice set of rims and slightly lowered..

From the Holden website...
Things you need to know 1. Max. sale price for 2011-plated MY12 Commodore SS manual.
Offer available on new models delivered before 31/12/11, unless extended, or while
stocks last at participating Holden Dealers. Holden reserves the right to change or
extend these offers......

Obviously it's a great price to jump into a new V8, as the best priced FPV GS
I could see with a quick search on carsales is about $53K. I thought pretty
carefully about getting into a new SS a year or so ago, when they had some
sharp offers back then.

It's the depreciation that stops me these days..... Your brand new $42K SS
will be worth about $28K in a couple of years.

Is this part of the December price blitz in the hopes of getting the Commodore back up as the #1 for 2011?

God I hope the Mazda 3 can hold on, its seriously becoming depressing that a 6 year old car can still be 'Australia's favourite'. Surely the rest of the world are laughing at us.

Also, you want a good buy, how about an XR6 for $34,990. Now that's a good buy.

Seems like very good value really.

But even then, as a Ford enthusiast, I wouldn't buy a Holden.

The new SS's are like the old SV8s. Povo packs. Need the SS-V for all the goodies, or the redline looks decent, any demo ones around?

Hmmmm ... For $41,990 I can have a Ducati 1098 AND a nicely tuned BF XR6T, both of which are capable of stripping the knickers off a worked SS.

Just my 2c though.

As soon as I read the title I knew it was a hulk thread.

But Hulk you do have a point. For the money it is a good buy. Hulk is right, with a bit of money these can be turned into real quick machines.

People may bag out Holden but every Friday night when I go for a drive with my mates to the Princes Hwy in Melbourne, the Holden SS, HSV GTS is all around. I would be lucky to see a few XR6T's and Typhoon and on the very odd occasion, apart from my BA GT, another GT.
