I am fitting an XR front to my series 1, there is the right angle brackets which attach the bumper to the front guard. However my front guards only have two holes in place of where there might be nutserts? Can anyone tell me what is supposed to be there? and which other models might have the correct front guards? or is it XR's only

I fitted an XR front bar to my S3 Ghia.
All you need is a right angle bracket, a nutsert into your existing guard for one leg of the r/angle bracket and a couple of small nuts and bolts for the other leg. There are peeps on here who have fitted XR fronts without the guard attachments.
