Default SAAB Australia placed in administration

The importer and distributor of SAAB cars in Australia has been placed in administration owing roughly $2 million to its creditors.

SAAB Australia has six staff operating out of Port Melbourne and just 10 new cars for sale in Australia.

The administrator Ferrier Hodgson says a creditors meeting will be held by the end of this week.

Partner Stuart McCallum says it was not unexpected as SAAB's Swedish parent company entered bankruptcy in December 2011.

"This is as a result of the bankruptcy of the SAAB cars' parent in Sweden, following the global financial crisis in 2008 and specifically the collapse of Lehman Brothers that led to a large shock in the global car industry including for SAAB," he said.

Sad for the people who will have no jobs.

As it says, it wasn't unexpected. I looked at one in 2007, and went the Mondeo instead.

There are a few 2011 95s on car sales, want to be cheaper than $49k before I put the money down.

Does SAAB even still exist as a car company?

Yes and no - the brand exists, but there's no current production.

Last year, National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB acquired Saab's assets and its brand name. Apparently, it intends to build an electric vehicle off the 9-3 platform and release it in 2014 - there's some more info here: http://www.wikicars.net.au/news.php#...article&pno=78.

Time will tell whether this comes to pass, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Bugger, I was annoyed when the parent company went broke a couple of years ago, I used to rally one back in the '70s, they were a brilliant little car and safer, and more fun to drive, than Volvo's.

That was when SAABs were SAABs. Once GM took over SAAB they lost nearly all of their identity.

I worked on a 90s Saab 900 and it had some cool features for the time, globe failure warning system in the dash, with all other sorts of fault codes it could log and bring up for you.

Shame to see them go south. At least we never saw the badge engineered Chevy Trucks and Subaru WRX's that they flogged in the states.

The last turbo 4x4 models were meant to be okay and there are still the rumours about how pig-headed and bloody minded both sides were (SAAB developing their own entertainment system rather than use off the shelf system, being obstinate with Bosch ABS, etc).

Knew a guy who loved them. Had a Sonnet, 99 Turbo, 9-5 and he loved all the rough edges and torque steer of his 9-3 Viggen (oh what a proper Lotus developed suspension could've done for it).

On the second-hand car market, they are an incredible bargain. Be a hell of a lot cheaper now too I guess.

It's sad too see another company goin down the gurgler, as well as it being peoples livelyhood , the company was probably someones dream at some stage, probably won't be the last to fold in these times either.

GM had problems with a Chinese buyout because of IP issues. The've been stung before.

I could never see Spyker or Koenigsegg making a go of it. I mean Aston Martin is struggling now despite the injection of private Arab money. They relied too long on an old Opel and Euro type 4 platforms.

At least their museum got saved. And poor old Erik Carlsson, they used to wheel him out for PR duties, he must be feeling a bit sad about it all.

Beggers the question..... 6 staff for 10 cars?

It's not as if they were overseeing a huge manufacturing or importing program, or a mass of customer enquiries.

What would those 6 staff be doing??

Geez. I remember the late 80's when my sister was head of payroll in cambellfield. Was many more than 10 staff then.
