And they haven't changed the design that much either.

I can see all the car rental companies on the Gold and Sunny coast rubbing their hands together already .

Thinks were different back in the 70’s: It was fine for a teacher to load the entire cricket team into his Falcon, or for the Scout Master to load 9 kids in his wagon for a drive to Albany, and a panel van wasn’t full until those at the bottom begun to lose circulation.
The Moke should have stayed in the 70’s, and a Chinese Moke is just plain wrong.

it will, same as a convertible has to have roll over protection so does this and it has a roll bar. that should get it through. buy a Moke made by chery is just wrong. at least the reborn mini was from a decent makerI wouldn't own a chery for a joke

No abs, no side impact protection, no traction control, no stability control, no airbags.
It needs all these and more to meet ADRs.

Haha you mustn't have ever driven a BMC Mini/Moke. It didn't need these added, they were inherent in the design. Very safe and predictable cars at a time when other cars would lose it when pressed. Years ahead of any other cars at the time. Very good for bush-bashing too before the 4WD craze came along and rutted all the tracks.

I don't know about a Chinese interpretation though, I don't think it would be quite the same.

110kmh max speed?

I'm guessing they would be registered along the same lines as a lotus 7 replica, or gt40 etc. so only has to pass modern emissions but doesn't need all the high tech safety stuff.

Had a Mk1 Sprite for several years and am still here! 650kg, worked 1330 motor and no mod cons :-) was good for 150km/h till the fibreglass bonnet would start to flex.. I nicknamed it the 'street legal coffin'.

Loved it and still miss it. Would go old school over a new one just for the simple pleasure of seat of your pants driving.

I liked the later model leyland mokes with the bigger sunrasia wheels on them, i always thought the little moke might be a good runabout, these should sell alright.

LOL, as a teenager, a mate bought one of these and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.
Just to knock him down a peg 2 of us picked it up and wedged it between 2 trees. Didnt work though, he dragged it back out ON HIS OWN!

it says FWD, does this mean Front wheel drive or Four wheel drive? I was hoping it would be a Wrangler competitor but it appears to be its own thing. My Polaris Sportsman 850 has more power.

I did 1/2 my apprenticeship on BMC stuff in the late '60s. Good little vehicles untill you have to do some maintainence between the motor and the firewall.
There's still the odd one getting about here in Cairns.
Driving them anywhere on a cold night is not something to be contemplated.

Not in cotton-wool wrapped Australia of 2013 it won't.

*Sigh*...I actually have a sister-in-law who point blank refuses to get into any car that doesn't have a minimum of four airbags. She actually was forced to ride down to a chemist to get some much needed medicine once in my '82 Celica, and the poor girl was honestly frightened...you could see it in her face, she was gripping the seats so hard her knuckles were white, and she kept telling me to "watch out" for other cars with a frightened squeek in her voice.

It's truly sad that people think that you are doooooooomed if you dare to venture out of your driveway unless you drive a car less than five years old and filled with airbags.
The funny part is her husband is restoring a 1937 Ford V8 roadster ute...can't wait to see if she dares go in that when it's finished soon...


Back to the Moke...if you want a fright, go and look up the price of an original Moke in very good order, especially something like a California or an early one with the canvas seats...it would probably be cheaper to buyn one of those new ones...

The MOKE is back, thanks to an enterprising Australian company that has contracted China's Chery Motors to produce a born-again utility vehicle for release worldwide. It's global launch is at Sydney's Bondi Beach later this month.

Created by British-born Hong Kong-based designer Michael Young, the new-millennium MOKE is now in production 20 years after the 1959 original -- built from Mini parts -- was last produced in Portugal in 1992.

Although it's designed to mimic its 54-year-old namesake, MINI International – an Australian company based in Melbourne – says it is a thoroughly new design incorporating the latest automotive technologies.

However, because it is not yet available with electronic stability/stability control, only limited numbers of the new MOKE will be made available in Australia under low-volume import laws.

As such, despite a starting price of $22,999 plus on-road costs, demand will far exceed supply in Australia, where MOKE's Jim Markos told motoring.com.au he has already received more than 700 genuine enquiries.

Markos expects that number to increase dramatically following the new-generation MOKE's official launch in Sydney at the end of October, before Australians become the first in the world to take delivery by next March.

Longer and wider than the original, the 'Classic MOKE' is powered by a 50kW/93Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine from China's Chery QQ. Available with manual and automatic transmissions, its top speed is 110km/h.

Chery Motors subsidiary Sicar Engineering has already commenced production of 1000 left- and right-hand drive MOKEs a year in a dedicated new Chinese factory and MOKE International says it has received more than 300,000 expressions of interest globally, following the car's reveal in Thailand earlier this month.

MOKE International says it will sell 650 MOKEs annually in both the Caribbean and Mauritius, as well as 500 per annum in Thailand, with countries like New Zealand, Greece, Vanuatu and Fiji to follow. However, there are no plans to export to Europe.

One of MOKE International's directors, Jim Markos said the response to the new MOKE was overwhelming. He said the first batch of vehicles for Australia was accounted for, with the second shipment 80 per cent sold.

"We've been working on this for seven years. Australia is only a relatively small market, but we're launching here first because it will give us credibility. It is built to Australian standards, not Chinese standards."

Markos said MOKE sales would be online-only – via MOKE Australia here – but the strong response has also led the company to consider its own rental business for the new-generation beach buggy. He said MOKE International was also in discussions with two large international investment companies, which could lead to "co-branding with companies with similar synergies".

There is no ESC or ABS, but the front passenger does score an airbag and all four bucket seats – including the optional rear seats – are fitted with three-point seatbelts and braking is via nine-inch discs up front and drums at the rear.

Based on a Chery platform, the Classic MOKE is also fitted with rollover bars, power steering, 13-inch alloys, windscreen wipers and a lockable rear compartment.

To be available in just five paint colours – red, yellow, white, light blue and orange – it will also be offered with a one-year/15,000km warranty and a five-year anti-corrosion warranty.

"We stand by our product," said Markos. "We're not ashamed to say it's built in China. Chery is China's third largest exporter and it's never had an emphasis on safety like this before."

Markos said an all-electric plug-in version, the eMOKE, will have a top speed of just 60km/h and a 120km driving range when it enters production next year, before going on sale globally by 2015.

Originally designed as a utilitarian military vehicle before being adapted for commercial sales, the original Moke was first produced in Birmingham in 1964. About 26,000 original Mokes were later built by British Motor Corporation (BMC) in Australia, before production moved to Portugal and ceased there in 1992.

I was expecting less than $10000 to be honest. Its not like there is much panel work, or hi-tech gadgetry. Wouldnt catch me dead paying $23000 for a Chery. If it was around $10k though, I would probably get one for fishing ;)
