hi all,
on a single lane country road near me, a number of pneumatic counter tubes have been set up at a roundabout. The odd thing is that there are 4 pairs of tube on each roadway. I believe a single pair is enough to count traffic in both directions on each road, so what is the advantage of the additional pairs on each roadway? |

My guess is they're doing more than counting cars. Data collecting, speed weight etc.

This is something I've noticed quite a lot in the past month, they're everywhere including on back streets, my guess is covert speed data collection.

Some of them are used to calculate speed, they put them on our driveway at work after a complaint.
I remember as a kid spending all afternoon hitting the strips with a hammer outside our house. We got a traffic calming device not long after, I always wonder if I had something to do with it

One of the reasons to fit three or four strips is detection of trailers.

Hi. Even though all tubes go across the road some will be blocked at the lane markings and only count the lanes closest to the counter at the side of the road. The tubes are blocked by the clamp securing the tube to the road and the tube is run across all lanes so it is less likely to get pulled off the road surface and get caught under a car. Cheers MD

Maybe if its a narrow single lane, they're collecting data, as to whether its worth widening the road.
