Funniest thing on A.C.A tonight!!!

:eclipsee_ Did anyone else watch ACA tonight with the story about the Four wheel drive's in metro areas. Whilst the aca people were filming/interviewing a segment in the carpark somewhere, in the background comes a "lady" in her big black (looked like a new Landcruiser)...... attempts to reverse into a spot, then "BANG".......foilage, leaf's etc (from said tree) gently floating to the ground, as she moves forward & try's again. Film crew chuckling off camera, the guy being interviewed (anti 4x4) turns, asks "did she just hit the tree". LMAO............ : :

4x4's are generalised to have an oldschool design, combined with a higher COG.

HAHA, what a tool! Though I sure do hate it when people prove scruby/aca/tt's points! I'd say 90% of 'real' four wheelers out there would probably have better car control skills than the average driver (especially @ low speeds). It's these fakies that oughtto be taxed off the road.
I'm just thankful it wasn't a p-plater as well :P

I think the issue with 4wd is more to do with crash avoidance than crash safety. Agile, they are not....

In brief, 4x4's aren't required to have crumple zones or multiple airbags. They are buils very strongly which means when you hit a smaller car (or any other car for that matter) it's the softer structure that gives way - the others. So you're risking other peoples lives. If you hit another 4x4 or something even more solid like a wall or a tree - guess who's the softest object that absorbs the energy?...

Beyond that, they're prone to rollovers due to a higher centre of gravity (COG as previously mentioned) and that's what kills most 4x4 owners.

At the end of the day, a Land Cruiser is the absolute LAST place on Earth I'd have my family. I'd feel safer in my Focus with a family of 4, if there weren't so many damn other 4x4's around.

Vehicles like Territory are not only based on passenger cars with passenger car safety, but they conform to crash standards (and far exceed them often) and are considered the safe option. There really is no need for a huge tractor 4x4 if you don't 4x4 and if 5000 people per month (or whatever it is) can swear on theair nanna's graves that they weill ever go offroad, then I'll run for Victorian premier...

Also they have a lower safety rating because of their tendency to do major damage to pedestrians - getting hit by one of those does more damage and killing than being hit by a rolla.

That is one of the factors that the NRMA use in their crash test safety data and star system.

People think they are safer because they sit higher and are more safer when you fit a bull bar. That is so funny.

But what is more funny is watching people tryingt to park one, ya have to wait for ages. This is why a second licence is required. They get their licence in an Echo and the drive a Landcriuser. : If you don't go off road (I'm excluding driving up gutters to pick up kids) then don't buy a 4x4!!

But the higher COG does tend to flip these type of vehicles easily!

Whilst people make some interesting points about requiring a different licence to operate a 4wd it amuses me that they have a problem "sharing the road" with them and bleat about not being able to overtake or see around them. Haven't you people heard of TRUCKS. They are the big diesel powered things that weigh 40+ tonnes that you also share the roads with. You are just as dead in your small car if you are hit by a truck as a 4wd.

It really annoys me when people (like Scruby) claim that 4WDs are dangerous because they have a higher center of gravity. If you don't drive it like an idiot, the high center of gravity won't be an issue. You cant drive a Landcruiser like an MX-5 and expect nothing to turn sour...

That said, there are a lot of people who really shouldn't be driving 4WDs. If you can't handle a big vehicle or don't have a need for a 4WD, don't buy one. Simple.

Driver training is they key (as usual) but don't hold your breath for it...

You can be driving sedately, be involved in an accident that causes the rear of the vehicle to step out and over she goes (4WD was travelling straight). You don't have to drive them like an idiot to flip one, I've seen it right infront of my eyes. 4WD wasn't even the cause, but they had to peel him out of the wreckage.

To say their high centre of gravity only comes into play when they're cornering at high speed is wrong. Vehicles don't often continue in a straight line after impacting another vehicle.

Hint: You dont know what is ahead and what could possibly come out infront of you in the future, which could require an avoidence manouvre.

Lets say your doing 80km along a country road, and a car/truck/bus pulls out in front of you at the last moment from a side street, you try to avoid in your high COG 4WD....

People say you can see further up the road,but one day I saw a Patrol run up the rear of a car,at the end of a line of TEN stopped in traffic. In order to see further you have to look further. And don't you just love the old chestnut "lucky I was driving my 4x4 when I rolled over otherwise I would have been more seriously injured",when the fact is it wouldn't have rolled in the first place if it was a sedan.

This is one reason why i'd say 4wd's are so popular. It's actually a more relaxing drive being able to see people on the brakes 4 or 5 cars ahead, being able to see who might running the red lights when yours turns green, being able to see parkd cars or cars pulling out onto the road from a much further distance. This kind of visibility simply isn't possible if your at everyone elses height. Not that this is an excuse for owning a 4wd that doesn't 4wd.
Maybe someone should design some sort of periscope windscreen :P

and sorry young'un i'd have to agree with others in saying most rollovers would happen when people are reacting to an emergency or have already been hit/are out of control.
