Default BA shifter cosmetics "done"!

When I last posted a thread regarding my BA shifter conversion, I'd left it looking all ugly & "naked".

Tonight, instead of working on a late assignment, I thought I'd have a crack at fitting up a manual gear boot with the shifter. It's a good thing I bought a heap of vinyl to practice on, because I made about 4 attempts before this one below:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...Picture007.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...cture00650.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...cture00550.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...cture00450.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...cture00350.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...cture00250.jpg

I've got some leather off MADNC_8 (thanks w4yn3!) which will replace this vinyl and match my seats.

I need to anchor the manual console fascia at the front, because I had to cut out the front bracket/support that the fascia slots into, so it's only connected at the rear (where the electric window switchboard is). I know how to do this, but it's midnight and I CBF sorting this out. Also, I know there's some wire showing in the overhead shot, but I know how to get around that now that I have the correct vinyl shape and hole pattern (the underside of the fascia has plastic dowling which I used to anchor the vinyl with).

I also need to make a proper "ring" where the shifter shaft goes through the vinyl (leather-to-be). At the moment I'd just made a little slit in the vinyl and reamed the shifter shaft through with the vinyl stretching around it. Sits nicely ;)

Finally, I cut some rubber matting to shape to cover up the trans tunnel gaps left by the hugeon hole I cut earlier (for lowering the BA shifter 5cm further so that the manual fascia cover would fit). I haven't test-driven it yet but I'm assuming that road noise and "breezes" won't be an issue anymore ;) ;)

Cheers all,

-Dave-

That display pic is an old one now, I've got a black trip comp, demist button & c/c now

So for confusing thieves, if I leave it in D or R it'd REALLY mess with them, the car won't start haha!

I think I might try another approach sometime in the future with the remaining vinyl... I might make up some triangles and stitch (ok, STAPLE while I'm just practicing, with the hems being hidden) them together so that I still have a cone shape, but no large ripples/folds in the boot.

Good job Dave. The colour does look a bit light though. The shifter nearly looks like a manual gear shifter. Do you have Park yet?

Loving your CD player as well! LOL

lol I still don't have park :P

The vinyl is only for practice mate, the leather I've got matches my car seats (it's a much darker colour than the vinyl).

I'm currently fitting an EF GLi tape deck up, but can't find the Earth for it! Currently trying to resolve issue on irc

Nah I mean there's no earth wire coming from the tape deck :( Otherwise I'd just connect it to the first bit of metal i see within the console cavity.

EBII4L, the BA stuff cost roughly $220ish from Ford earlier in the year. As for the electronics required, PM Muzza for prices ;)

looks nice.

Just a few questions about the gearbox operation,

I presume using P R N D it works as normal. When you slot it to the side, you can select your own gears.

If say you were in 3rd gear and you gave it wot will it stay in 3rd gear or does it kick down?

If the shifter is to the left and you have 3rd engaged, It will stay in 3rd regardless of throttle.

J4M35 there'll be another time... a time when I'm not a zombie

Damo, STFU! : Autos rock!

Pilch, I owe ya a ride I think ;)

Thanks Glock

Karl, P-R-N-D works like an ordinary auto. No electronics required for this. When in D however you can flick the auto across and it engages an overriding circuit which holds the gear you want. It does hold the gear you want (most of the time, unless you're doing 20kph in 3rd, in which case it'll kick down but quickly get back to 3rd). But compared to ordinary D, it holds the gear you're in, like say 2nd at 40kph & WOT (and will stay in 2nd until you change... it won't automatically shift to 3rd)

Gilly, yeah, I can't wait to put the proper leather boot in! I wanna experiment a little with the vinyl I have left over to see if I can come up with something better.

As for today, I fitted my EF tape deck instead

PM recieved & replied to!

I think I could handle it :P That insanely stiff accelerator spring of yours will keep me in check :P

The BA shifter takes a little getting used to though.

I'm up for another pilot session in the XC however!
