You don't need a torque wrench to remove anything. If you're going by the book you need one to put it back on, but if you know what you're doing you don't.

i'm just interested in giving it a new coat of paint and would like to remove it and do a good job.
however i've been told that it has to be taken off and put back on with a torque wrench so that the head isnt damaged.

torque wrenches are only made for tightening bolts not undoing them. just use a spanned and be careful not to squash the new gasket to much when tightening it back up, they dont need to be super tight.

dont forget to fully clean it, else all those bits of burnt gasket on the head will cause oil leaks... use a razor and some 2000 wet and dry, bought the el up like it was chrome... no leaks so far!
