After wondering about it for some time and getting yes, no & maybe answers, I finally went to Ford myself to find out once and for all whether or not the AU2 remotes would work on an AU1 Update model (fitted with Smartshield) and unfortunately no they don't work. The guy tried and tried but no go :(
Incase anyone was wondering - there's your answer.

Do you know if the Au series 2/3 remotes work with a BA and vice versa as I think both of these use smartshield

well i no that ef keys can lock each other same as the remotes but they will not unlock

Smartlock & smartshield have nothing to do with the door locking systems. These are the names for the immobilizing systems.
