Default are these ultra lows?

just got my car lowered, i asked for ultra lows but i dont think they are. the car still sits really high. the code that was on top pf the box was kffl-57sl and kfrl-27rl for front and rears. are they really ultras?

The part numbers you should have got are:
kffl-57ssl
kfrl-27ssl

SSL = Ultra Low. The term Ultra low is normally used to describe stage 3 lowering for a standard height car, where stage 1 = lows = XR height, stage 2 = SLs, stage 3 = ultra low = SSLs. So from an XR, it's really only a stage 2 lowering.

I've got superlows on mine and they are coming OFF!!!!!!!!! And not soon enough.

Pain in the a.s.s. Scrapes everywhere. Like Paris Hilton, looks hot but fundamentally stupid.

I'm going up to S2 XR height, don't see the point in going any lower.

If I might make a suggestion - just do the rears first. Replace them with XR height (King Lows), and see how you go. I have XR springs in the rear of my XR (it was superlows), but the weight of the gas tank brings it somewhere closer to between SL & SSL, so I've kept the SLs in front, and I don't scrape nearly as much as I did when I had SLs in the rear as well.

Yeah, I lowered my Fairmont to XR height the week before last and I'm praising the fact that I chose not to go lower. I've already heard 4 or 5 scrapes from different areas, although it goes over speed humps fine. I knew with my driveway, and my work's driveway (which dips down a bit first, and then goes uphill) that I woulda been ********* had I of gone lower than XR height.

The ride has been so damn smooth since I replaced all the springs/coils and shockers. Now just gotta get the new rims :evil_laug

I haven't even got the tank in yet - it goes in on Monday.

I've booked the car in to get the XR springs installed on Thursday, because there is no way I would put the LPG tank put in while it's on the superlows. However, if the weight of the tank is going to drop it down to SL-SSL height again, I might have to put something taller in.

Main problem is I can't get the car out of my driveway without ripping the guts out of it. I live on the low side of the street. and the footpath creates a hump that I have to drive over twice a day.

Bugger it. The original Fairmont springs are starting to look pretty good. And I've just bought new shocks to suit the XR springs...:

Sounds like my driveway. In mine, the XR height rear (with LPG tank) and SL at the front, plus a little bit of turning going in or out of the driveway means I no longer scrape.

Serious? mines on superlows all round and its got a bodykit, i don't scrape anywhere.

Yes. I'm really serious. And it's not just the driveway - I have to take most speedbumps at a 30 degree angle.

It's done some real damage under the car. Buggered the exhaust. As I write there is a genuine XR8-220 header to tailpipe system being fitted to the car, and I don't want to stuff that. I spent 4 grand at the panelbeaters about six weeks ago, and there is already a scrape under the front bumper.

Also, if you look under the front of an IRS Ford, just in front of the rear wheels, there are brackets with 2 bolts per side going through them. I don’t know what they do. But regardless of that, the one on the left is now very, very bent. I don’t know how this will affect installation of the new springs on Thursday.

And the ride is bloody awful.

This is what it is costing to fix the problem:

- Second hand SII XR8 springs $120
- Freight $60
- 4 x Munroe Sensatrac shock absorbers to suit AU Falcon factory lowered $512
- Labour – around $350

Believe me, I wouldn’t be spending another grand three months after putting the superlows on if I wasn’t serious.

[Edit] What is really ****ing me off is that guy that sold me the superlows sold them to me, via eBay as "genuine XR8" springs and shocks. Turns out the springs are King superlows as provided to Herrods, so they are black, not yellow, and the shocks seem to be a T-series code, although I'm not sure on this.

I only worked out for sure what had happened when I found this tag on one of the front springs:



Unfortunately, I didn't inspect the stuff before it went on the car. I had the freight company deliver it straight to my mechanic.

Needless to say, I've sent the eBay seller an email since I found this, but he isn't replying...and he lives at Alice Springs so I can't really stop by his place and see him personally.

The T series package was an option on all XRs, so the guy on ebay may have been right. The fact that they were fitted by Herrods is neither here nor there, really.

I actually tracked the guy down by phone at his place of work a few hours ago.

He told me he sold them on behalf of a friend, and accepted what the other guy said they were. Given the guy's occupation and position in life, I'm inclined to believe him.

It gets more interesting though. He said that the car the springs and shocks were originally fitted to was driven straight to Herrod's workshop after delivery for the full Herrod treatment including suspension, motor, exhaust, etc, etc. His friend understood that the items I bought were the stuff Herrod removed from the car when they did their thing. It raises the possibility that maybe Herrods gave him the wrong stuff back at the end of the job.

Its all speculation. Anyway, if anybody in Sydney wants these superlows and shocks PM me, else I'll eBay them myself.

And bugger me, I've totally hijacked this thread. Sorry Luke.

BTW Luke, regardless of my experience with lowered suspension, I agree with what others have said here. Your car looks great as is, why change it?

I have the t3 kit and the front is and back are very low and I never hit anything. I go over those huge lethal speed bumps but still no problems. The only time iv scrapped is from taking something angle that was much to steep even for a non-lowered car.

My Ghia with XR suspension sits 660mm front and 670mm rear (with 1/2 tank fuel) on 235/45/R17's.

Like Richo86 I wouldn't go any lower for general all-round driving (city/country).

Don't get me wrong, the superlows/T-series shocks have their advantages - this is easily the best handling car I've ever owned, I mean, its like its on rails (at least, on a smooth road). But I'm a bit old for the scraping and the super-hard ride.

I think this is where I want to be.
I would seriously do the backs first and see how you go - you may find it good enough not to need the front done. Most of the scrapes are actually because the rear is hanging too low, not the front. If you replace the springs yourself, you save on labour too, and the rears are fairly straight forward - at least they are easier than the fronts.

The rears certainly sound like SLs, but the fronts are a bit high for SLs, more like Lows, but there is around +/- 10mm difference between cars, so anything's possible, I guess.

thanks for the comments guys, it does look good but my old ef was pretty low and i loved it so i have 2 get this one the same. i thought id do it while i was young and could put up with the rougher ride and scraping.
i went and talked to the guy 2day and they are superlows. seems like somone fu*ked up so there redoing it thursday hopefully
