Default ACT - Expansion of mobile speed camera sites

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, John Hargreaves, today
announced that Canberra's mobile speed camera sites will be expanded, with a
further 21 locations being added to existing sites.

"The expansion of the ACT traffic camera program reinforces the Stanhope
Government's commitment to encouraging and enforcing safe and responsible
driving," said Mr Hargreaves.

"Changes have been made to the Road Transport (Safety and Traffic
Management) Regulation 2000 to increase the number of declared mobile camera
sites from 99 to 120.

"The ACT Government will gradually widen the operation of its speed camera
vans to include more arterial, major collector and minor collector roads in
an effort to encourage motorists to slow down.

"Speed combined with driver inattention is one of the biggest killers of
drivers on Australian roads. The use of speed cameras has been shown to
positively modify the behaviour of speeding motorists. Camera locations in
the ACT are placed in areas where there has been a demonstrated history of
road crashes and speeding offences.

"There are approximately 650 arterial, major collector and minor collector
roads in that ACT, and in a staged process all of these roads will be
assessed and, if considered suitable for van placement, will be identified
as part of the mobile speed camera network," said Mr Hargreaves.

The location of all mobile camera sites can be viewed at
www.transport.act.gov.au

I didn't know that the ACT had a problem with speeding? Or are they just getting low on money??

Everyone speeds it's just harder to get caught because they are mostly mobile vans and there isn't many patrol cars. ;)

I'm waiting to see them deployed in the roadworks areas during the resealing of certain roads. I don't see too many doing the posted speed limit, most seem to do what the road is normally limited to.

That's because the limits are rediculous and most drivers know it. There is always exceptions to this though.

The one in Anketell Street should be rather interesting. That road is very wide even with cars parked on both sides.

I can't really see where they would park the van where it would be in a position that isn't obvious.

Have you sat in one of those vans?
They had one at a mustang show early this year, and they let you go in and move the camera around and take 'pictures' of cars on show. Unfortunately, I took a photo of a car in the distance, not realising some member of the opposite sex was bending over to look at the interior... needless to say, this was displayed on the screen for those close by to see... Detail those cameras can pick up is incredible...

Sure you didn't realise.

Thing I like is the vans aren't bullet proof, or Mack truck resistant.

I wonder what those rangers (they aren't coppers) tell people they do. I wouldn't admit to being one of them.

I have heard some of the ones working at night have guards with them. They would be so easy to destroy.

The operator I spoke to even snapped her own mother speeding. Once the photo is taken, they can do nothing about it.

If you think that's dodgy you should see the double dipping on Northbourne Av. I saw a van, no less than 50m after a fixed speed camera.

A lot of street racers would of been done that night.

Automated speed enforcement, certainly in NSW over the last 11 years, has seen to reduced numbers of serving HWP, this in turn leads to a reduction in the number of infringements issued to non-speed offences.

The result is worse driver behaviour related to items such as indicating, lane discipline, attitute and what not.

Fines revenue is something that is 'predicted', in NSW via the AG's department.

I look at informational posts such as this and feel embarrassed that GovCo stoops 'typically' I guess, so low. Coppers on patrol, yes, but this sort of rubbish is pure BS and sadly expected.

It seems some of our 'experts' admit to have run out of ideas. Hopeless, really.

The ACT has successfully made the transformation from Road safety to Revenue raisers.

I spotted this on the Monaro highway the other day.

3 cowardly cops hiding behind a large road sign, pointing their little radar down the road, with their cop car hidden way off behind the bushes….road safety or revenue raising.

Also have you noticed how the speed signs on the revenue vans have shrunk? They used to be the same size if not bigger than the usual roadside ones, now they have these pathetic little ones about a 6th of that size.

So if you are not 100% certain of the speed as you approach the van, now you can’t tell until you are about 3m away.

Road safety or revenue generating?

That is very sneaky. Why do they need 3 coppers hiding behind the sign? Do they all have cameras?
What colour will the new vans be I wonder? Are they still going to be white or will they get dark colours so they blend into the background.
I suppose they probably have to have white vans for safety reasons. If they get dark colours and blend into the background people may not see them and drive right into them.

i wish they would put one on the main road at the end of my street. Its so dangerous. A 70Kmh zone with everyone doing 90 and bus stops with no where for the busses to pull into they just take up one of the two lanes, dangerous as hell. And all the barricades from the dedicated bus lanes they are building mean you can't see around the corners! At least there will be traffic lights when its finished that will save a trip around the block, I will be able to turn right with safety, yay!

people driving large trucks /front end loaders maybe?

I spotted a new location the other day too. Down Isabella drv. I drive by with 'the bird' saluting them. Do they honestly think they are helping people, or just filling the coffers.

That's the funniest bit, as peoples attention is automatically taken away from the road when speed cameras are introduced like this, they are more likely to be looking at parked cars and there speedos rather than the road in front of them.

I think in another post their was some information on a study done in Vic in regard to the effect that speed cameras have had on accidents and the nunber was actually up. Proving that people are not concentrating on the roads and that speed is not the major cause of accidents rather the lack of concentration and attention to what is going on right in front of you.

And if you think the coroners report will make a difference think again, Herr Bracks was actually installing the new cameras in the weeks before the election, even though so many are so opposed they still voted him back.

What I;m waiting for is when they start to use your GPS locater to fine you, this was discussed in many magazines at around the time they were first being trialled for the public many years ago. The fear was that there would be no need for either police or cameras as the unit can measure your speed, the worst part is that even if you're overtaking you're still technically speeding. It would just send the info straight back and you would just get a letter in the mail, which if you think about it is not too dissimilar to the current way things are run lol.

1984 it seems was not so far from the truth after all.

The only reason why Canberra drivers speed is that there is no police presence and the speed vans are so infrequent and obvious that you would have to be a moron to be pinged. . . and thus deserve it. Speeding is just one thing that ACT drivers ignore. Driving while using a mobile is rampant. Coming home today (Fyshwick to Jerrabomberra) along the Monaro I saw one driver in Tennant Street with a phone stuck to his ear; another exiting Bunnings; three at the Newcastle St - Canberra Ave intersection (one on my left, one on my right and one in front); one on the on ramp to the Monaro from Hindmarsh; one in the RH lane (blocking traffic in the 100kph zone); and another turning left into Lanyon Drive. That's seven in the space of 15 minutes and 12 kms.

. . . and I don't know why anyone in the ACT should complain about 'low' speed limits. The most common limit is 80kph on the major arterials and ring roads- what's the problem. That's a luxury that Melbourne and Sydney drivers only dream about.

Yeah it is better than what others have but seriously you can't tell me that the majority of our 80km/h roads aren't good for 100 easy.

As data_mine said the majority already does 20+ so it can obviously be done safely.

Civic is beyond a joke. 60km/h on a 3 lane road (Northbourne Av) _

But Civic has pedestrians, cars parked on the side of the road, lots of traffic lights and relatively heavy vehicle traffic. Speed limits are set to take into account more than just the number of lanes on the road.

Look at the number of people cleaned up on Northbourne over the last year. 80kph would be absurd in that area.

The speed limits are obviously low if 'everyone' (there's the few exceptions that dangerously insist on doing the speed limit in the right hand lane) can do 20+ happily, and on the whole safely.

You are right on the lack of police presence, except on Friday night, where they're out to get everyone. One Friday night I got breathalysed three times, on a circuit of civic looking for a park. Now good on the coppers for being there (enforcing drink driving), but where are they on other days/nights and at other locations.

People should be less stupid. Surely the vast majority of those incidents were because of someone jaywalking.

But really, no point arguing. Until the governments of Australia wake up to the fact that driver licensing is a joke, far to easy to attain. And start implementing tough licensing tests, compulsory driver training (not the here's how you 3-point turn and parallel park). Speed limits are going to keep dropping because of the general publics gross stupidity and lack of skills and the whole lack of responsibility that is becoming prevalent in Australia (we're closing following the US and it's NOT a good thing).
