According to the news reports this morning, there was something like 20 cars in the same predicament! Twits. Wouldn't you notice the water rising?!? Apparently a Mercedes 4x4 floated off to sea too...

Probably the same sort of people that drive on the beach in AWD's then wonder why they get bogged.

if so many people were caught out it was obviously conditions very much out of the ordinary. so they all may not have been collectively 'brain dead'.

Like the first post said "BOM predicts gale force winds an 8m tides!!!" if your going to take any vehicle onto a beach it's common sense to check the days weather first!

To slightly hijack the thread

Was at my local Dealership arranging for a new vehicle service when I heard the Service Manager spewing over some "Idiot" who'd taken their AWD Territory 4WD driving through some bush tracks and had bent this and damaged that and was claiming on warranty. The final words were "Doesnt that FK/Wit know that these cars aren't 4WDs".

But seeing the tv ads for these vehicles I would have taken the view that they are a 4WD and should be capable of at least light 4WDriving to say the least. This is certainly the case with all the other equvalent vehicles which are promoted in this way ie Nissan Pathfinder, VW Touareg, Holden Captiva to name a few

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, surely you can use it like a duck.

Despite their appearance, the Terry is still an AWD. Not a fully fledged 4x4. I wouldn't take a Rex offroad, would you?

Are you sure you don't mean the Nissan Murano? The Pathfinder is more like a Medium-Sized Family 4WD (in the true sense of the word, ie. it has selectable High and Low Range) and it's direct competitor is the Toyota Prado. I mean, sure, the Pathfinder suffers with a lack of ground clearance, but anybody who wants to take a 4WD into extreme environments is gonna do something about the ride height anyway, you don't see too many Cruisers and Patrols still riding at OEM height. The Pathfinder is certainly not a 'soft roader' like the Terry or the other models you mentioned.

I saw on Fraser Island a VW Toureg the V10 model. It coped with the sand no worries and kept up with us in the massive 4wd Tour bus thing we were in.... our driver actually pulled over to let it past as it was doing the city tailgate on some tracks!

It's funny when we get someone in a AWD and they go offroad track or beach and they say "But they do it in the ad!" No lies, people do it!

Bet those cars are never recovered, probably gone now. (fools)

I had a dealer question why I had taken a Top of the range Nissan Patrol off road. I was running a muck on a salt lake and tore the cruise sensor off and ripped out some loose wiring to the tail lights. He was shocked that I went bush, and this was in Kalgoorlie. I told him I would have bought the EL Fairlane if I did not want to 4wd.

And theres lots of mining holes in Kalgoorlie and the Nissan can jump most of them, I saw it in the add

This sounds like a true story I heard on another (car) board a while ago.
A members father, who lives in the Mallee (Vic) wanted to buy a new 4wd as the old Land Rover was getting tired. Member took dad to a big Japanese 4wd drive car dealer in Melb. After listening to the young salesmans spiel about chrome running boards, stereo system, carpeting throughout etc etc, he said it was magic to see the salesman's face when dad said "I wouldn't buy a 4wd that I couldn't hose out"

Hey don't get me wrong - my 3rd vehicle was an FJ55 cruiser waggon and for 4wd I would look at anything other than a cruiser but next time a SWB - waggons are too bloody long - like drivin a freight train.

What I'm getting at is that the ads clearly indicate that these vehicles are capable of 4wd trekking to some degree. Yet the Service Manager is complaining about a customer doing such.

It's not the customers fault the ad said he could do that

If he really wants to push back, its a blatant breach of the trade practices act for misrepresentation of a product and the product not being fit for purpose.

Has anyone ever read any of Len Beadell's books. I can highly reccomend them.

http://www.beadell.com.au/

I am hoping to do one of their guided (tag along) tours when we get our new troopy.........

But you guys are right, there is a huge difference between AWD and 4WD.

Cheer all.

Lol, go easy on the south australians... been a while since we've seen this clear liquid you guys call "water"... sometimes we forget that's what the ocean is primarily comprised of.

What is so truly disappointing of my south australian bretheren is that it wasnt just one car... it looked like a fricking carpark down there!!!

So - who's tried a set of 33's on their terri??
