I'm thinking about putting the exhaust out the side and I need to know what legal things I would need to do. Basically there would be a 2½" pipe coming from the extractors to the side just behind the front wheel. This is what I want to do, though I'm assuming it would be illegal without a cat. So I'm open for some ideas on where it should lead after the cat. Would it be legal if I ran it just in front of the rear wheel? And would there be a signifigant power gain from this? Also I'd like some opinions on the mod. Fire away...

side exhausts must exit from behind the rear doors to be legal from memory

IIRC, it must be 10cm behind the rear most opening window, only on the passenger side, must not protrude past the body and be pointed towards the ground at a 45 degree angle.
Still requires an engineers cert no matter how you do it... That said, its the toughest looking exhaust IMO   EDIT - The 2000 Mustang Cobra R had sweet side exhausts too...

From the vicroads vehicle modification guide 2003.
"If to the side of the vehicle, the outlet must discharge downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less that 15 degrees nor more than 45 degrees and to the rear of any adjustable window or vent.
