Default What controller for GT4

What's your prefered controller to play Gran turismo? Lashed on a steering wheel for GT4 today, I thought I would be able to lap quicker straight away but found it was almost like learning how to play. Straight off I was smoother but a lot slower but slowly got better, but I think there is potential for very quick times & a bit of drifting.

I got the normal controller but it's pretty crap for drift, my mate is selling his steering wheel I think i'll buy that for drift. Is the steering wheel good for normal racing?

I reckon the normal controller is fine....however there is a new force feedback steering wheel i've seen that looks damn fine.

for **** factor yes the wheel is cool. But IMO 99% of the time you will be quicker with a normal controller.

My wife (bless her) bought me one for my birthday. I've got the Logitech Force Feedback wheel, it's sensational. On the controllers you have full left, full right, full acceleration and full brake, so the tendancy is to 'tap' the buttons to get the in-between stuff (like half brake etc) With the wheel, if you want 1/2 brake, you give it 1/2 brake, simple.

The very best thing about it though is being able to brake just slightly for better front end grip whilst accelerating out of a corner (trail braking / left foot braking)

It does take a while to get the hang of but in the end it is better.

BTW, at 320km/h in the Corvette the feedback is so strong you can barely keep it straight. It's bloody hard work driving hard.

the PS2 controller has variable input....you can control the acceleration and braking with the X and square buttons, and if you can't manage it there, the analog stick on the right can also control accel. and braking....

I use the control

When you press the X and square buttons it is flat out accelerate or flat out brake, nothing in between. You also can't accelerate and brake at the same time. As for the sticks, I prefer accelerating and braking with my feet, just one of my little quirks.

as said in my above post, yes, there is in between with the X and square button and you can also accelerate and brake at the same time...

I dont use the right analog stick for accel. or brake because its too confusing and no where near as good as using the buttons...but the left analog stick, is the only way to go for the steering with a controller imo...

I agree that the steering wheels with pedals are a lot more fun, but you definitely can accel and brake as much or as little as u want with the buttons...

The Circle X Square and Triangle buttons on Dual Shock 2 controllers are all pressure sensitive. Do you have one of the black ones with glitter or something in it? I don't know how many games use it, but in GTA III and VC, running is fastest when the button is fully held down, and you can see how much pressure is being applied to the accelerator in GT4 (also known as the X button) and I certainly know mine has varying degrees of pressure being applied.
Also, you can brake and accelerate at the same time, but it depends on how you grip the pad.

As others have said, that's not true. You can hold the revs at any RPM you desire when launching, or only brake at half pressure if required.

I'll stick by my controllers, you just can't go from lock to lock fast enough with a steering wheel setup in my opinion. When getting every single license as a silver (mainly the special license as the others are easy), I could not get close with a steering wheel, but was able to do them within an hour or so with the controller.

I would love to see someone get the gold special license with the Nissan Z JGTC at Suzuka with a steering wheel, as in, I would like to be there watching it.

Um...

The wheel is not **** factor. It is easily worth a second or two a lap when you are right on the limit.. I never drive with any aids on as you don't need to! You control the throttle with your foot and it is ALWAYS faster this way.

In the comp that is running all my times are with no aids on as the driving aids slow you down so badly. But if you have a throttle pedal you can control the wheelspin so you don't need traction control. Plus you can 'feel' what the car is doing as the wheel loads up before a power slide so most of the times you catch it before the car breaks away from you which saves you time in a lap.

Plus it makes the game about 200% more fun. Anyone can drift with a controller, try it with a wheel, way harder and more rewarding.

I've got the first logitech steering wheel (GT force), and I loved it in gt3 but I havent used it in gt4 as I cant be stuffed whacking together a bench to clamp it to. I will next week though, I'll have plenty of time to get stuck into GT4.
I really want one of the new 900deg steering wheels, 2.5 turns lock-to-lock, that would make it heaps better as you dont have to be as gentle eg turning the wheel 1/4" to do a 90deg turn...lol

And as others have said, ALL Dualshock2 controlers have pressure sensitive buttons.

no probs panda...but you're right, pedals are more fun and probably a shit load easier to accurately control throttle and brake

Haha, that's cool mate, you learn something new every day. It's a little annoying in most games, but GT4 has real nice control, however, I'd believe you on the pedals and wheel thing, and am looking into purchasing a set (and possibly fabricating a cockpit)

yeah i didnt know about the buttons untill a mate told me.. the result was instead of squeezing the controler to within an inch of its life, i was gentle instead... the controler didnt melt in my hand and my lap times plumeted!!!
