Hi,
just curious to know if anyone with an AU that has fitted HID found any issues with it damaging their headlight reflectors ? I want to be careful and avoid bubbling the chrome lence. I have fitted HID's to EF/EL and they dont have any issues. Patrick |

i wouldnt fit a HID kit to an au headlight full stop, they're a reasonably glarey headlight to begin with, it'll only be exhasberated with a HID kit..
just so you know, fitting a HID kit is illegal.....and you will be defected for it. IF you really want HID, do what ive done and do a propper retrofit, thats where you take all the HID parts out of an OEM Xenon headlight and retrofit it to your headlights. ive been there/done that with a hid kit, and retrofitting OEM xenon parts just walks all over a kit.... please take a read of my custom headlight thread in my sig, you'll see where i went from standard lights, to custom lights, to xenon kit, and finally to a propper retrofit........ |

I had those same headlights in my ute ... but the chrome suround ... when they were first out ... the light beam was atrocious ... and with a prpoer HID H4 conversion kit in ... the glare was even worse ... the beam pattern was all over the place with so many different dark spots in areas it wasn't funny. And the beam from the HID had strays they shone up in the tres as well and all over the shop ... the wife hated it when i used to follow her (and she's in a Territory which is higher). I sed to blind her on low beam ... and I had the beam adjusted all the way down. Also the highbeam adjustment on those Altezzas were nasty as well .. one was in the trees ... the other was on the road n further than the low beam light. I put mine in a 44 gallon drum and burnt them/melted them. I got rid og the HID conversion kit as it wasn't suited to the vehicle or the headlight. I am now runing projectors and halogen globes ... and the beam pattern from those are fantastic indeed ... no dark sports ... and much better peripheral vision off the side of the road ... also the eam distance is much futher as well due to how the projector works with the cut-off shield behind it. My beam stretches futher ... but still remains arouns the rear bumper height of all vehicles on the road ... even if they are 70-100 metres away. You acn see the difference when driving along a concrete divide on most motorways how the beam works and also the distance as well ... especially when comparing to other vehicles. The only way you could use HIDs is if you have a complete rerto-fit kit from a BMW/Merc/Audi ... etc including their own ballasts and projectors (special type HID projector) ... and even still ... not really ADR approved for your vehicle then ... but probably the safest way of utilising HIDs in your vehicle. f you can try and use one that has the gyroscopic height adjustment to auto level the beam of inclines to reduce glare as well. Although if I was going to have HID headlights again ... it'd be on a vehice that came with them from factory and specifically designed by the car manufacturer .... no aftermarket jobies for me anymore. I am back using halogen again and I am used to it .. took a little while to wea back of HID as I was used to the brightness ... but happier now that I am not using them.

Also those Altezza reflectors aren't the best and hate HIDs ... as I burnt holes in the back of them from the HID kit I had in them.

I've got the blue xenon bulbs, and they are flippin' bright on low beam. Just have the factory high beam bulbs fitted. They seem to do an awesome job anyway... no issues so far with any of the crome-ing, etc...

they're dodgy, made of sub standard materials, etc..... ive thrown out a few pairs already, which have melted both on the lenses and where the globes fit to the reflector..., thats with STANDARD WATTAGE GLOBES they're bad news...sorry, but not a fan |

I've seen a Philips HID Xenon Kit fitted to a BA Falcon, was their reps car and the results were impressive. But by his own admission it was illegal for use on the road and it's not something you could drive round with forever. And at over $1k for the kit, it's a lot of money to spend to have something you technically can't even use.
I have Philips GT150 globes in mine and am going to try a set of Crystal Vision globes in high beams, they are 4300k which makes them illegal but high beam is not something you use when anybody else is around anyway so they should be ok. Personally I'd just try some better globes if you want a bit of an ugrade, and leave the altezzas to the ricers, they are hideous.

I guess ignorance must be bliss cos I've got just the factory headlights with Phillips +50s and they are excellent. They are very noticeably brighter than 99% of everything else I see and on low beam there is a definite cut off line of light that I adjust to just below boot height at about 4 car lengths and there is no glare and I never get flashed by oncoming traffic. On high beam there is good penetration to about 300m and plenty of peripheral light for 90% of what the car does, especially in town. When I travel at night I bolt on a set of Lightforce 240s' with one spot and one combo and that gives out more than enough light for me.

I have the same projector headlights as Mechan1k' made by The Dok. I currently use Narva Plus 50 H1 globes. The best globes I have used by far, plus having the projectors make the light beam even better.
