I just missed out on an ef wagon for 600 bucks, needed some work but.
I wouldnt be able to get more than a grand trade - in on my ef, and that was before taking it bush bashing haha...
if you can sell it at that price go for it, hell my mates grandfather got a grand for his camira and it needed new tyres engine etc etc etc... was a heap of poo..

A lot of bashing in this thread but I gurantee that if you wash it and shine the tyres, put it on the corner with a big sign saying $990 with REGO it will sell in no time.

The relevance of prices in the trading post etc is nil when you grab someone with an impulse buy. Pricing it under $1k drops it into the impulse range for cars, it will sell and it will sell quick if you put it on a good corner (that won't attract a ticket!).

Who'd pay $990 for your car? A young bloke who will immediately see his first car in all it's shining glory, a family man with a thin wallet who needs a run-around for him, an older bloke who wants something cheap and easy with rego day one, a bloke who rides a bike but want's something to tow a trailer etc etc. There are plenty of people who won't believe how cheap it is - trust me.

If you've got time on your side, grab a cheap set of 12 slotters with rubber and put them on - go and ask for $1700 or $2200. RWC will make it sell easier, you've got buckleys in the trading post but on a corner you've got good odds.

Don't believe all the haters, get your car into the right market place where comparisons can't be drawn so easily and it will be viewed under a different light - by different people.

You sure have a bloody good point there. Its not too dear as to make someone think oh ill have to get a small personal loan, its cheap enough for the sort of folding cash people have sometimes at say tax time etc.

A lot of families are struggling with high mortgages etc and a grand for a family car would get a smile on the dial for the right person.
Hell I would go back to an ea, if it didnt have rust in it and had mpi, 5 speed and an lsd ;)
better headlights then an ef that's for sure ;)

I'd say you'd have to move your car pretty quick or you'd have to re-register it to get any sort of an amount of money for it, look at it this way , or how a buyer would look at it :-

you would like (say) = $1,500-00
34 days rego left .......= $770-00 (NSW roughly) in the next 34 day's
Total Cash Up Front-.-=$2,270

14 day's to transfer Rego = Unknown Amount (I think , or 28 day's)
34 day's to get RWC ......= Unknown Amount

Also you said it's got 256,000 k's . bit's missing , a few dent's ?

You can't take much notice of "dealer prices" as they are "loaded" to make a trade-in look better , say someone comes in with a trade that's worth $200-00 and the dealer had $ 400-00 "loaded on" he can afford to quote $600-00 , sounds good .
Then if the dealer hasn't done much to it & the buyer might want a couple of things fixed , and also a profit for the dealer , He's not in it for charity , all these prices are included in his sale price .

So if he's got it listed at $3,000 , he MAY have paid $750 to $1,000 tops if it had 10 - 12 months Rego.

As for "Laser junk"

My Daughter bought a '93 KH laser recently , 1.8 EFI , Twin overhead cam , 16 Valve , P/Steer , Air Con , 5 speed , Alloy's , Tyres 90% front 65% rear , May 2008 Rego , CD player , Excellent interior , good Exterior , new front brake pads , 1 new CV joint , 2 young lady previous owners since New (paperwork to prove it) 156,000 k's .... I've driven it myself , as good as or better than our EF , $1450-00 Private sale , and she was only looking for 3 weeks .

I sold a Manual, Lowered NA Fairlane sedan with full electrics, XR8 interior and alloys for 1200 with 5 months rego.

My first E Series was an EA that i paid $200 for with 3 months rego, needed 2 tyres and a couple of little things for RWC and i drove that little rocket for near on 2 years before selling it.

Im currantly looking for a good tidy EA-ED S wagon and wont pay more than 500 for such a car...

I wont sell my 92 EB (17" ELGT's, Lowered, Fairmont interior, EF Tickford motor, Sports zorst, new brakes, new rubber and window tints) because i know its only worth around $2k max

Take what ever you get offered mate... E Series cars are becoming worthless... I still love them though...

Cheers Dan

hmm, the prices of cars in NSW seem grossly out of line with SA..for a start i can register my car for 3 months at a time (i cant even afford to do so for any longer) and cars seem to be much more expensive here..all i could find under 1000 dollars when i was 17 a year ago as my first car was barely running unregistered near-wrecks..i finally managed to find a 1983 R30 Skyline that served me well for about 5 months untill i saved up enough to buy the EA from a mechanic family freind for 1000 bucks..i was simply amazed that it was a good car with so little faults, cars twice its price both in dealers and privately looked like crap in comparison

GTP006 , this is not meant to be a "bashing" mate , just car values as we have found them recently .....Looks like "buy in NSW , sell in SA"

My son (15y/o) helps one of my mates in his workshop of a Saturday morning for an hour or so , he is a "3rd hand" if they're putting in a motor or gearbox or any little odd jobs , he's being taught to weld (MIG & Oxy) and car mechanics . My mate asked him would he liked to be paid in cash "or would he like a car" , well , being 15 what would you say , "Car of cause" .

So after work last week , the mechanics Tilt-Tray pulls up the driveway with a 1988 Camira on the back . Ok , a Camira isn't a Rolls Royce , but for a 15 y/o it's HIS car , he worked roughly 18 hours for it . If he was on $10 an hour , thats about $180 (at the outside) . When he's 16 in Nov. and can get his "L's" , the mechanic said he'd give him a RWC for it . He had a choice of an EA (Auto , no good to get licence on) Datsun 200B , too rough or a '74 Escort Auto . (same as most states I think , if you get a licence on auto , you can't drive a Manuel unless you get re-tested)

Condition of car =
Tyres = 70% , Interior = good (no rips or tears , but could do with a Vacuum)
Exterior= Small ding in the drivers door "if you get it in the light" NO rust (country car) 181,000 k's , 5 speed , no oil leaks , no smoke , Needed a polish (done & looks good) Exhaust repaired , thanks to mechanic .Everything works .
Like I said in my earlier post , best offer I got for my '87 XF wagon was $175 . I had it advertised for $650 ono.

GTP006 , The only problem with spending money on a car to sell it , is most times if you spend $600 it may only return you an Extra $300 , very risky . Like you said "a tidy-up ,another ashtray , black the tyres , a good polish , but most important is make sure the engine "looks good" no oil or grease , also a quick spraycan of black paint under the guards ..."least amount spent for most effect" . Cars are "money pits" see my Sig we've got 5 here now Lol.

mine has rego till october 23rd..i seriously dont see why you people wouldnt at least try to sell your falcons for a normal price..i have seen 90% of early 90s Lasers sell regularly for 3000+ dollars and they are crap as. Strangely, VN Calais are selling for 3500+ from the same era as my car, even executives fetch 2 grand..why the poor falcon?

I think you need a bit more experience and research with your car values .

XF and EA would be the two lowest value Fords at the moment I think . Too New To be Collectable , too Old to be of any Value . UNLESS they were exceptional condition Fairmont’s ;Ghia , Less than 100,000k,s

I wish you luck

I paid $2000 for a one owner ED Fairmont with 112,000km in top condition about 18mths ago........ At work we pay up to $50 tops for an EA now and sell them for $200 to $300 and if it is real good with rego then $400 tops.

We got a 2 owner EB2 with 11 months rego a few weeks back with 222,000km and very good condition, we paid $150 for it and sold it for $700.

that is a fair generalisation. I bet the next person who gets my ef would say its a bucket of poo, but that is not because ef's are shite, its because its been in mud, towed ba's and generally driven into the ground yes?

the engine isnt really the problem. its the shite cooling system attached to it. the blocks often had casting sand in them when they were put together which clogged the radiator up, enough cook the engine and do the head gasket.
