Removing VCT off XR6, and changing cams???

I am about to buy an AU XR6 engine that I will be using for offroad purposes , I had been looking for a HP AU six, however, I have found a few later model VCT engines low k's, so a better engine to start with, as I have an aftermarket cam, and vernier gear set, and I am not really interested in low down power, can I just remove the VCT stuff, and run my aftermarket gear??

I an sure the cam would be the same, just the difference in the timing/VCT stuff
