Default Compression Lockup @ 100km/h

aii guys

scariest ИИИИin thing happen to me last nite, the scene is princess freeway, about 1:30am, near millers rd turn off, i go to gear down to 3rd from 5th, at 100 km/h, the basterd goes into 1st,(mind u that 5700rpm is 1st gears rev limiter at 60km/h) BANG compression lock, car kicks out sideways on the highway , correct it, hits the limter, motor screams off its tits, then motor turned off...n a mate next to me seen sparks thrown from underneith...

pulled over, another mate came back, from down the highway, said they even heard it like 15 car lengths cruising infront of me @ 100km/h, checked to see if there was ne holes in the block ,there woz none, tried turning motor over, starter motor made the most ИИИИed noise screachin n wot not, and the motor finally turns over n pretty much idles friggin lumpy, like on 4 pots, like 2 pistons were blown, limp her home, n car wont start no more, i thought it was seized...i could nearly cry, because it was over something real careless...

today, we got straight on it, 9am, we seen that the starter motor was unbolted n just hanging there!, n the map sensor hose was blown straight off, after fixing all that, motor started! OMFG!!!!!!

checked all leads, all pistons were firing, all gave a miss to the back wen a lead was taken off...took it for a drive, 2nd gear missed once then cleared up, n she drives fine, what a freakin friday night scare...., no cruising tonite for me, ill tag along if anyone cruises from here...id say, give her a rest, n a pat on the back, for surviving....

Ford, Built Tough

thanks man, so far, car drives fine, gears go in fine, no engine noises, and , well i guess, no weird sounds comin from back there at the wheels...lets hope, it keeps its performance, i think, from soomethign like that, that it would make the engine slower?

you may have been lucky enough to have had your clutch slip a bit and save your driveline from the harshest of it...But by god you were lucky...I would be changing engine, gearbox and diff fluids just to make sure there are no little bits floating..Just for a bit of piece of mind.

glad to hear it came out ok.. But what i dont get is how the selector allowed it to go into 1st??? Every manual ive driven you have to absolutely jam the thing into first higher than its set level??? coul be different with yours??

Just in interest, what would have happened??? i assume since the motor was being driven by the turning wheels, it would have spun the motor to about 8700rpm???

Just curious?

somebody was driving my car a while ago, i was in the passenger seat and my mate driving couldnt drive a manual too well. he went from 4th to first at 70kmph. the revs skyrocketed to 5500rpms, i pulled it out of gear so fast, but at 100kmph god damn, id say at least 7500rpm

It probably wouldn't of gone above 6000rpm... It would of hit the rev limiter? Or does your car not have one? Anyway as you said the car went into a compression lock meaning the wheels were turning slower than the actual road speed, plus the clutch most likely would of slipped a bit as well. Those 2 things probably saved your engine from death.

Yeah I don't know how you could manage to change into 1st gear !!

Rev limiter wont stop the car hitting high rpm if its a miss-shift, since its doing it mechanically, and nothing will stop that.

You're lucky you didnt smash the valves or explode the flywheel.

true that man, well the motor shut off and stalled, yes thats right, no software could stop the pistons from doing 7,500rpm for a split second, i swear,, so far theres no unusual noises, n she drives fine, id like to run some checks, maybe another run to see if i can get a similar result, see if it ИИИИed it, the starter motor grinded agaisnt the flywheel apprently, n created the spark, have to as i sed run some tests n a better check, but the quick check underneith n on top shes fine...lets see how the next few days go

maybe the bush on ya shifter is flogged, does the shifter spring back to the centre ? I would have thaght it would be very hard to accidently go 5th to first. Oh well you learnt a lesson and came away from it with a car still intact.

Theoretically you would've been doing 8060rpm...

2500@100 (assuming gearing of 1:1 and 2.77 diff... this is what I used as a start point)

Change diff ratio 2.77 --> 3.27 --> Gives 2950rpm
Change gearing of 1:1 to 0.78:1 --> Gives 2300rpm
Change gearing of 0.78:1 to 3.5:1 (this is EA 1st?) --> Gives 8060rpm

Methinks the clutch would've slipped somewhat or your engine would've let go in a big way!

Autos rock :P

Why didn't you just put your foot back on the clutch and go, oops, don't do that again.
