It’s the last car James Bond would use to save the world, but the super spy’s female companion will go some way to saving the planet by driving the frugal Ford Ka in the upcoming 007 blockbuster Quantum of Solace.
In the latest instalment of Ford vehicles making a multi-million dollar appearance in 007 flicks the quirky Ka will make a cameo appearance alongside the more traditional Aston Martin DBS, which will again be driven by Bond. The product placement deal will see the Ka driven by Olga Kurylenko who plays the part of Camille, another glamorous 007 sidekick who helps the secret agent during his stunt-infused exploits. While its tiny engine is hardly up to the high performance expectations of Bond, the Ka’s fuel efficiency is in line with changing consumer tastes and a global shift to smaller, more frugal cars. Ford is investing heavily in small cars like the Ka and sees the popularity of the James Bond franchise as an ideal way to promote the sorts of cars it struggles to sell in some countries, including Australia. “The new Ka is the perfect match for the character of Camille – adventurous, individual and thoroughly modern,” says former Ford of Europe COO, Stephen Odell. The deal to feature the Ka in a Bond film comes after the larger Ford Mondeo was driven by Bond in the latest 007 movie, Casino Royale. Ford recently sold the Aston Martin brand that is synonymous with Bond movies. Ford Europe design director Martin Smith says “[Camille] is our target market for this car”. All manner of vehicles have featured in Bond films, from Aston Martins, Lotuses and BMWs to Citroens, a Sunbeam and even a double-decker bus. The Quantum of Solace is due in Australian cinemas on November 21.
