Default Toyota to announce job cuts

Quote:
The union representing Toyota workers expects the company to announce today that it will cut more than 100 jobs.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says a drop in demand for locally-made cars and the high Australian dollar are hurting the company, despite ending 2011 as Australia's top car seller.

The company is expected to address workers this afternoon in Melbourne.

Union spokesman Ian Jones says any job cuts at Toyota will lead to further job losses elsewhere.

"For every single job in automotive manufacturing directly, you have a three to four to one flow-on effect," he said.

"So if for example they were talking 100 jobs - and I think they're probably talking about more than that - if they're talking about 100 jobs then there would be 300 - 400 jobs (lost) elsewhere in the community."
