Today the good news for everyone in the Mildura region. No Toxic Dump to be placed near Hattah. Well deserved fight for the whole NW Victoria.
This dump would not only have effected the farmers but have effected every business and trade in Mildura. Being in a trade myself that relys on an income from farmers, Fresh and dried fruit growers this would have hurt big time.

So its not nuclear? I thought it was.
There has to be somewhere else where no one lives, and I heard on the news that it was something like 500k's from Mildura anyway. And wouldn't this waste be looked after, or is there a history of leakage?

When it comes down to using this stuff for paints, cleaners etc. everyone is fine with it, but when it's time to take care of the left over rubbish, "oh not in my backyard..."
Well its got to go somewhere, and besides it's not like they take a steel drum to a paddock and emtpy it out on the grass. It's got to go somewhere, that's the reality.

Offer them your backyard. Reality is, you dont want it in your backyard, why should anyone else? As for the leakage etc, let them make a 10 million dollar guarantee no incidents will occur, I bet they cant, or wont back it. Sure they pay for cleanup, but not a guarantee. Even those in the business wouldnt put their money where their mouth is. |

I read the thread title and thought it was going to be all about the ramifications of "post big-night-out curry/kebab". My bad!

Those kebabs are nasty fix for a grog bog that is stuck.
On the toxic Waste dump side of things. While its not going in that town. What poor town is going to have to deal with this crap. IT must be a sewage plant for politicians all the crap they come up with. |

Thank you very much, couldnt have put it better myself. SOME people just cant comprehend what an immensely negative impact this waste dump would have had on everyone that lives in Mildura and surrounding areas. Now to those "SOME" people who just dont get it, have a think about how you would feel if it were your town, your farm, your backyard that this was happening to. You wouldnt like it either, would you? Overall I'm just so glad to hear that everyone who put in the effort to put a stop to this waste dump, finally won, and that the hard work has paid off |

FFS.... just build it in outback SA and be done with it.
I will gladly have it in "my backyard" (to use everyone's favourite catchphrase!!) just to get the NSW, Vics and QLDers to stop whinging.

When Mildura was having the fight against it did they offer any alternative locations? Everyone didnt stop it they just deferred/relocated it. Still would have been better in a less populated area and I dont mean MILDURA, where can you it put it that it does not have negative impact? (Nobody wins) But I figure they think its better to leave the existing dumps (Lyndhurst & Tullamarine) operating until technology catches up with alternative disposal methods. |

Fancy the Bracks Goverment having even considered putting it in the Food capital of Vic. All I can say is lucky the Bracks Government did a backflip after seen swings of 30% against ally Indpt R Savage. Its amazing the power voters can have when they want to.

You know an alternative could be the companies disposing of the waste provide a multi million dollar guarantee to any community effected by failures to move and store safely. Its not like they have to pay out if they do their job, if they are so sure its safe, whats the problem? Somehow I doubt its going to happen though. There is no ideal solution, but no-one can blame a community for standing up to prevent it on their doorstep. Mildura isnt just some town in the middle of nowhere, the amount of produce they grow for the nation is huge. Its like putting a dunny in your kitchen, thats not a catch phrase buddy, its apt. Choosing Mildura was idiocy. |

I'm not debating that there aren't better places to put it. It's just pathetic the way Tulla and Lyndhurst didn't care when it looked like ending up in Mildura. Just like Mildura. Not their concern anymore, so who cares? Uh oh, watch out, Tulla and Lyndhurst are kicking up a stink again. Simple fact of it is if people want to live in the 21st century we have to deal with the risks that go along with it. Don't like it, go find some Amish farm to live on. Quick Bracks, find out where to put it to lose the fewest votes. I suggest Spring Street. Though the voters in Lyndhurst are probably still annoyed about the Scorsby freeway, just leave it there. Can't lose what you don't have. |
