Yep drove to Exhaust Bros and had them fit a standard system they had ripped off a car. Drove up the road and had it tested, drove straight back to Exhaust Bros and had the mine put back on. Just over an hour of my life wasted.

Yes, if you get it tested and it is over the limit, it costs another $37 dollars to test it again!

Over $40odd dollars its hardly worth spending thousands over a simple test!
however it could set precedents in the courts if someone won the case

Free revenue. Nothing to stop them asking everyone to come in if thats the case.

They have to prove you guilty, you don't have to prove your innocence.

Wouldn't last 5 seconds in court.

If I'm not mistaken, the noise of motorbikes is actually allowed as a safety feature - ie you can hear them coming. Anything with a modified exhaust though is definitely illegal.

my xr comes with a stock 2.5", and i took 1 resignator out, n i think it might be over,but even still wiht it on would be pushing it

I can understand cars that blaarre out noise from the back, but 95db isn't that loud when you think of it, espeically compared to harlys, n trucks, so why do we have to put up with crap legislated by ****as that sit in officee chairs snobbering to each other about what " " They feel is right (people who regulate laws im talking about).
I just think its stupid and gets my anger up when i hear about things like this, the government should be spending money on better things like fixing transport servies or somthing...

As the street ford editor said in his column its only going to get worse for modified car owners unless we start to unite and do something there just gonna keep piling on the crap laws. Can anybody sence a need for speed type setup in the future where hardcore modified drivers don't use real license plates, drive unregistered and just never stop for anything i hope not but who knows whats the go ten years from now lol.

You are mistaken.

According to the 2006 standards in Victoria a stationary bike can make up to:

* Before 1 March 1985 100 dB(A)
* After 1 March 1985 94 dB(A)
Ive got a plate on my bike stating the original decibel level, its on all bikes.

Nuts to that though, Ive got a V twin. Mine is really loud but it seems police dont care as much with bikes. Ive been through heaps of breath testing stations and pulled up beside quite a few cop cars. I ride to work everyday and never had a problem.

Is it safer to have a loud exhaust IMO but its not legally allowed.

Used to work with a bloke with Harley Heritage Soft Tail - had a pair of shotgun pipe exhausts (straight through bit of chrome piping from the head to the rear wheel)...this thing was difficult to talk around even at warm idle (but what a wonderful mechanical sound - brup cradup brup cradup brup cradup)

He rolling down the middle of some stationary traffic down to the front of the queue (as you do on a bike) when he realised that the first car in the queue was an unmarked TOG vehicle....he took off on the green light and tried to keep it quiet and pulled off at the first side street and didn't get pulled up.....he thought he may have got away with it - two weeks later here's you noise defect notice.

So he went down to his Harley shop, the mechanics pull the 'legal pipes' off the wall and fit them to the bike, my mate get his bike tested and cleared of the defect, goes back to the harley shop where they refit his shotgun pipes and put their 'legal pipes' back on the wall for the next poor sucker customer who gets pinged...

Guy in the RTA told my mate about how some rookie cop defected a bunch of motobikes without realising they where all coffin cheaters or bandito's or something....so a dozen bikers all rock up the RTA at once, cross their arms and glare at the tester....needless to say they got tested and all passed regardless of what the the reading was!!!

Just a quick tech question that relates to this thread and my car....

The exhaust place are going to fit a standard 1.5" muffler to my car, because thats what they think needs to be done. Because my system is 2.5" does this mean then new muffler will be a bottle neck to the exhaust, decreasing its performance?!?

It will definantly be a bottleneck, the size of the pipe the gasses need to get through is nearly half the size. How much it affects performance though i dont know.

Yeah that will cause a huge restiction its a third of the size. what if you put a few big washers along the exhaust?

why fit such a small muffler, the ends will have to be flanged etc and the the restriction on flow this would create would be worse than stock. Best go with your 1st option and have a stock system put on for the test and then swap it back. Don't ruin a good sports exhaust by putting small muffler on it.
