im fairly sure 185's would be ok as they came out with them. 175's should be ok if you drive like a tool and give a reason for the cops to pull you up.

If you are running a smaller rim size then it can be defected. It just like running to big of a rim.

That's if you go more than two sizes from factory, right? even then, you just need to get it certified.

You can usually go an inch wider than factory I think, does that also include going an inch smaller? Considering the tyres fitted to a GL were pretty skinny anyway I think you should be ok within those rules, but best to check what they are officially to be sure.

Never really understood them on a street car...though at least 175 isn't ridiculously narrow. Many years back when the "pro street" look was all the go, I saw a beautiful hatchback Torana with massive rear tyres and front runners that wouldn't have looked out of place on a motorbike...in fact the back tyre on my GSX1400 is way wider. I seem to recall they were on 15x3 rims, and were only about four inches wide. It was powered by a wild tunnel-rammed twin four barrel 400 small block.
The main thing that went through my mind was "I hope you don't have to slam on the brakes in a hurry ro turn a corner fast...there ain't much there to grip..." |

In Vic I seem to recall you can go 1inch more than the biggest optional factory rim. Don't know about smaller...

Most cars are at their limit in respect to brake and rotor clearance anyway , never got the small tyre thing if not a drag car ..giving up grip and steering isn't good idea in my opinion only .as for going up in qld from memory is one inch larger than biggest available , and again an engineer can change that .passing the brake test may be biggest hurdle
