As you guys have a wealth of knowledge I hope you can help me out
My friend is moving to Cairns and is going to get her car transported up to Cairns - she has been quoted $1,500. She has a 2015 Suzuki Swift. Seems expensive to me - is road transport cheaper?

You didn't post the mode of transport of the first quote. Road transport cost will vary depending on the type of service, door to door, depot to depot, enclosed or open truck etc.

Road is the only way.
Going Nth she's competing for places on car carriers that have permanent contracts with car manufacturers. Probably be cheaper for her to get someone to drive it up there and fly them back.

I've used CEVA transport a couple of times, to/from the major cities. Were well priced and great service. Have a look at their site online, as prices are there as well. Not sure about Cairns.
Cheapest is always depot to depot, where you drop off and pick up from their depot. |

Give Alf di Salvo at CEVA in Cairns a ring. He will put you on the right track.

For comparison I just had my Suby delivered from Townsville to Newcastle via a combination of Carways, Brisbane to Newcastle depot and Melcrest Auto Express, from Townsville to Brisbane the cost $1124.00 so $1500 from Melbourne - Cairns is on the money.
The Melcrest or 1st part of my transport was a backload from the selling dealer in Townsville to Brisbane but Melcrest don't cover NSW so Carways took it from Brisvegas to Newcastle Depot. Car arrived a bit dusty was on top deck of truck. Melcrest arranged the Carways connection, arrived with no damage in transit. Melcrest in Qld 07 3274 4601 Carways 1300 227 929

It's a 2015 swift some numbers may not work, but consider when it gets up there the rego will also need to be changed so that's another cost, but is it worth selling in Melbourne and buying a new car in QLD?

Yeah we were thinking about driving it up but then you have to add in the cost of accommodation as we will have to stop somewhere over night.
I am unsure whom she got a quote from but when she said $1,500 I just thought that is a huge cost. I am going to do the ring around on the numbers you guys have provided and I will add the quotes here. As per usual you guys come through will all the good info/advice

I don't know much about this but I'm reliably informed that if you place an ad on this site then quite a few companies will contact you with their best price.
http://www.loadshift.com.au worth a try.

I payed $1450 for a GQ Patrol from wagga to townsville 4 years ago, it's not cheap. I also waited 4 weeks for mine to arrive as i took the slow option to save myself $500

I thought that your company paid for your car transfers.

Ive moved a few cars interstate over the past couple of years and that price seems good.
ACT-BRI - $650 MELB-BRI - $850 BRI-BOWEN - $600ish So if you look at that, $1500 is a good deal IMO. If you have time and you want a holiday, take a week or so and do it. If you dont have the time, dont want the wear and tear and other costs transporting is the way to go. Even accommodation if you take your time will be a third of that (and thats going cheap).

I just had a week off work AND I need more time off work for hip operation so I do not really have the time - although it would be a cool drive in a lil Swift lol
Jesus these transport costs are expensive - you could prob ship a car from USA to here for that lol

Cost me $321 to get a Mazda RX8 from Perth to Adelaide on the train... Was going to be about $600 to Melbourne but we just picked it up from Adelaide as we were driving the other car through anyway so it made sense.

Not trying to sound nasty but you seem to think that 50c a klm is expensive. And to drive I would think it would be at least 3 nights accom.
