Hey CB, after selling a few family cars over the years ranging from 2 to 15k I just advertised them for what I would look for in a car.
In the sub 5k category don't overthink it. Neat and tidy, presentable, and most importantly roadworthy, (tyres) do an oil change, tidy up under the bonnet, tyre shine is your friend. Highlight what's good about it, $1200 sound system, new tyres, brakes only 3 months old, battery still in warranty or what ever. Let them find the faults, like the back window doesn't go down or something, then they'll want to knock a bit off, makes them feel clever and think they got a good deal by knocking you down. And any receipts or books with service record, even old records. Good luck.
