Subiaco Oval Upgrade

This is pretty for off topic when it comes to cars, but there are alot of us who enjoy their football (this includes both AFL and Rugby) and this is a current issure esp. for us over in the West.

The West Australian Football Commission have started plans to expand from a 43,000 seat stadium to a 60,000 seat stadium and they think it will be good for the 10 or so years after completion. Personally I do not think it is good enough.

The facts are: Perth metro population 1.5mil (growing faster than most states due to resources boom). 2 AFL clubs with total membership at somewhere near 65 or more thousand people (eagles over 40 and freo over 25). 1 Rugby team - has seen sellout games before membership near the 30k mark. Usually 1 or 2 major rugby matches a year all sellouts. Several concerts a year as well - Robbie williams has sold out the stadium for one gig and last I heard the second gig was all but sold out as well.

So what do you guys think of this? Should it be made bigger than 60k seating capacity?

BTW I have just gone onto the WAFC website and gave tthem a bit of a complaint about the lack of capacity in the upgrade....

I'd agree that they need to build it to cater for more than 60,000. The Eagles membership alone is over 40.

How good would a derby be with an 80,000 crowd.

im not from WA but i would say that west coast would fill way more that 60,000 every game they play

pretty sure freo have 36,000 members, but yeah thats gonna kick *** going to the derby when its all done, or obviously an eagles game when it's completed since they have alot fans

The whole stadium thing needs to cater for more than just AFL. Like it or not, there are other codes and other sports that would all benefit from a multi-seat, state of the art stadium in dulllsville. We really have to stop thinking small and realise that if we do the job properly and put some thought into a new stadium, then Perth has a chance of hosting international sporting events and teams. God knows, our government was short-sighted enough to let Rally Australia go, lets not let a great opportunity go to waste here. As for location, IMO Subiaco or East Perth are decent locations. The parking in Subi sucks, but there is a train station (if they could work out to put on extra transport for events...go to any event in Melbourne to see how to sort out public transport) and it is close to the city. Subi also has cafes and bars to cater for the public. It is a ready made spot.

I agree with the parking, they need to get either a multi story complex near the ground or put some effort into the public transport part (enough trains / security and transport price included in ticket sale?)

If tose membership figures are correct then it is worse than I thought - Derby day there would be about 80,000 wanting to go.

As I said in my first post It is also used for a couple of international Rugby events each year, The Western Force Play there, the Glory play there if they get to finals, The Robbie Williams concert will be there (so I am assuming other Large scale concerts would consider it as an accepable venue). Most of these can cause sellouts (OK the glory must have still had at least 30k rock up to some of their finals game anyway)

The location is perfect, it is in a cultural hub that is very central, I have a feeling there are a lot of issues with the locals who dont want that amound of people / traffic near their homes though. The WAFC had enough problems with these certain people when they put up the lights initially to make the ground eligable for night games.

just have to take a look at the telstra dome, it holds many events so it all sounds very likely for it to be a many player in events for Perth in the future, when are they actually goin to start the process? and when is it meant to be completed?

Typical of things they do in Perth.
Like the new Convention Centre, which there was talk the other week, of ripping it down.
And the same with the Burswood Dome and Entertainment Centre.
Build it once, and build it right!
Be interesting to see how many people are turned away this weekend at the predicted best derby so far.

I reckon its a wast spending the money on Subi. But like some people have said it has a good location which is important. They need to build an all new stadium, where the entertainment centre is, is a good location but im not sure if there is enough room there, but it definately needs to hold at least 80000...

There is a public transport option when you buy your tickets. It is an extra fee ontop of the ticket cost.

When you are a memeber it is an extra option you can buy.

The ticket will have a green Transperth logo on it and this entitiles you to free public tranport to and from the game.

You need to have the ticket on you so no good buying it and then picking it up at Subi, unless you only need to to travel home.

Transperth also put on extra trains and bus services for each game with driect express bus services from certain pick up points. The trains that are put on have longer/extra carriages and are more frequent on all lines.

So public transport to and from the game is fairly well organised if you know what your doing ;)

They really should make a whole new ground. Bigger better and with the potential to hold many sorts of events.

The Robbie Williams concert has been mentioned. The first one sold out in about 30 minutes. The second is also sold out. Pearl Jam are playing there at around the same time. The Eagles (band not footy :P) played there last year to a packed house.

The only other places are the Dome, convention center (Both of these places have the worst acoustics ever!) and other small venues which arent that great for big rock bands.

Come on City of Perth. We need better facilities. Its no wonder we get passed over for every awesome event. Especially when you give away the Rally!!! Not bloody happy Jan! Although we do get the Red Bull plane races for the next 3 years

Considering the WA Derby WCE vs FREO 60k Memebers togehter deff should b upgraded esspecially due to popularity of footy :P
