hmmm where to start with mine... near drowning, loosing 2lt of blood due to slicing a vein open in my hand (still have the scar) because i got cut off on my pushie going round a corner and put my hand on top of a broken beer bottle as i fell off my bike (yep sharp bits almost went through both side of my hands), came off the road at seriously high speed, attempted a backflip on my motorbike coming off my damn and landed on my head, i was paralised for 30minutes (probably more shock then anything else). that's all i can remember at the moment..... had other bike stacks n stuff but i can't rmember any of them been near death.... |

When I was 6 years old I nearly drowned in the local river after being swept into a sequence of two rapids. It was a school excursion to go swimming, I was pulled unconcious from the bottom of the second rapid by one of the parents. I still have very clear memories of the sequence of events up to the point of blacking out.
In my early 20's myself and 3 mates got cornered in a pub in Warnambool by a huge mob of bikies. We had to make a run for it and get the hell out of town, lucky we could run faster than them and get to the car before they could organize themselves to chase us down. I've got no doubt we would have been dead!!

Gees, this will show my age. Easter 1979??, Bell's Beach Surf Comps were moved to Johanna (spelling??)Beach, as there was a very small swell at Bells. So my Brother, a few mates and I hoofed over to Johanna and while we were there, decided to surf part of the beach that wasn't used for the comp. The shore break was making 4-6 feet. Out the back where the comps where held, it was making 10 + feet.
I was out for about an hour, and saw a good swell brewing, and began to possition. Paddled and caught it, took the drop and wiped out on the first cut back. That's when I was in trouble. My zipper on my spring suit came all the way down and the top half opened and dropped to mid arms length. I couldn't swim or paddle, being twisted in the suit. I remember hitting bottom, feeling like I was in a washing machine. I managed to get to the surface, grabbed some air and reached for my board. I tried to pull up the the fouled wet suit, and was hit by another breaking wave. I went down again, gulped water... This time I thought I was gone, and hit bottom again as I tumbled with the swirling water. It was then I felt weakened and almost done. Then bang, another wave. And to my amazement, I was then being carried by some other Surfers that had seen me struggling. I spent the next hour coughing and shivering. Man, that really scared the bejeesus out of me. Not recommended folks. |

I had a brain anyrizeum back about 4 years ago; I was 34 and will never forget it. I was just got home on a normal Monday night
Sat down with beer to watch news, then when I was walking down the corridor to go to the loo. I blacked out smacked my head on the door jam. I believe I was out for about 10 minutes, came to I had a huge lump on my head, biggest headache ever. I called out to neighbor who was going to work to see if he can take me to the local GP. The GP took my blood presser which was around the 220 mark Straight away he called an ambulance to go to the hospital. To cut a long story short 4 weeks intensive care 3 more weeks in hospital 12 weeks of work 5 weeks no driving 4 CAT scan 4 angiograms 2 epidurals 38 stapes 1 scare from middle of forehead to behind right ear……………. 1 Stainless steel clip the size of a 20c piece in my head for life……. |

While my story isnt as unique as others here in this thread, its still scary to me.
About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. (Im 30 btw) About 2 years ago I went into hospital with pneumonia of the lungs spurred on by the RA. This pneumonia wasnt like the regular pneumonia you hear older people getting with flem and all. (excuse the graphic nature) But it was more on the inflammatory side of things. The RA had given me an off shoot pneumonia which clogged up the lungs with fluid right into the lower lobes of the lungs. Effectively making it very hard to breathe and left me incapacitated in hospital for nearly 3 weeks. Now you might be saying to yourself, well what so life threatening about that? Well while I was in hospital I had about 7 xrays, 5 CT scans and umpteen numbers of blood tests done. Still no actual diagnosis on the exact condition I had. they later diagnosed it was BOOP or Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia http://www.epler.com/boop1.html there really isnt a quick and easy fix for this type of pneumonia, so I was put on a huge regiment of all types of antibiotics as the blood tests were showing that my rheumatoid factor was showing quite elevated. They then insisted I on wanting a lung bronchoscopy which involved going under local anesthetic (as they wanted me to respond to their requests during the procedure) and getting an endescope going up my nose and down my throat into my lungs to check on the condition and clean out what they could. Sadly the pneumonia was so deep into the lobes they could only get a 1/3 of the way down as the air vessels got too small. As I woke out of the local anesthesia I only barely noticed I was being moved to a different ward. Intensive care unit. (ICU) For days I laid there wondering why I was there. According to the doctors who administered the Bronchoscopy they noticed that my breathing was that bad my heart beat got that low that it was a serious concern. I was released from the ICU after 3 days and put back into my original ward. The very next day of me being back I woke early one morning totally unable to breathe, no air in, no air out, it was like someone had covered my head in a plastic bag, I pressed the emergency alarm and the doctors came running in wondering what was going on. I was in the bed choking, gagging, blue in the face and holding onto one of the nurses shirts petrified not knowing what was happening to me. Strangely, the nurses kept telling me 'calm down mr bird, calm down' but this made me more irrate as I couldnt breathe! The other urse told me I need to calm down and regulate my heart beat right down as I panicked not being able to breathe. It was hard but I managed to do this after about 10mins. The docs came in later that morning to address me on the cause, but they couldnt, so down I went to the xrays area and got another xray. The results were back within hours and according to my specialist, I had a hole in my main bronchial passage. Friggin great I thought. All I wanted to do was go home. They put me on heavy pain killers to kill the chest pain. Later that day, I found that my skin around my shoulders, neck and face started ballooning to the point of being scary. it was weird, I lost 8kgs in the first week, my legs looked like sticks but my upper half looked like I ate 40 bugers within a week. when I touched the skin, it felt and sounded like bubble wrap. like tiny little bubbles wiggling around under my skin. The docs diagnosed it to be subcutaneous emphysema. Meaning that when ever I breathed in and out, the hole in my lungs was letting out particles of air under my skin. The other option was to lacerate areas in my skin to release the air that way which would leave me scarred for life. Alternatively I could wait till the hole fixed it self and let the trapped air slowly over weeks dissipate into the skin. i opted for the latter. So while I may not have totally died it was still a traumatic experience in which I thought on a number of occasions while I was in hospital it could be my last time. But with all this happening, Id like to thank my wonderful wife who was right there beside me every step of the way. She slept there with me in the ward on a chair every night and kept the positivity going as well as emotional support.

When i was 15 i was practicing my BMX racing at the local track. While power pedaling on the back wheel through some whoops my chain snapped casuing myself to shoot forward of my bike and into berm, my head hitting the only rock in sight.
Woke up 2 1/2 hours later in emergency with only my jocks on with 15 wires stuck to me and some indian doctor trying to stitch up my face. I couldn't walk right for nearly 3 weeks as my brain had all that fluid surrounding it and evrytime i stepped i could literally feel it moving around inside my skull. My doctor said if it doesn't get better within the next week they may have to drill to relieve the pressure. I thought bugger that! and 2 days later it all went away. Till this day i still thank someone that i'm as solid as a rock.

I forgot to mention :
I had fluid surrounding my brain. That is why I had the 2 epidurals.......... THEY DO A THINK CALL SPINAL DRAIN TAP (a tap in the base of your spin) WHICH LET OUT THE FLUID IN THE BRAIN...... On A Pain Scale out of 10 ................... 20 out of 10 : : |

Yes, a couple times
Car accident at six weeks of age when our beloved XA falcon sedan got nailed by a valiant and we rolled one way and he rolled the other Mum got 80 stitches on her arms, I got thrown around the car and because of that, am on hormone medication for the rest of my days. Not so bad as it has some bodybuilding and other advantages that may appeal to the blokes Then at age 10, dentist stuffed up giving me anesthetic and I stopped breathing for many minutes and only just got revived. Probably not as bad as others but that's enough for me
