Ford seems to have fallen off the rack a bit since I last looked at these, but the RI stills rates Ford highly. The RI and owner satisfaction surveys often wildly contradict each other. Maybe owners of some brands like them so much they don't mind them conking out regularly!

Skoda and Lexus seem to be the only two brands that consistently sit up the top on both types of survey. Australians don't buy many of either

It's not hard to see why they're doing so well - the cars are full of features, look ok (to some) and priced right. That's all most people are worried about. Multi link rear suspension? Most people would choose the increased luggage space afforded by a solid rear beam even after being explained the dynamic benefits of the proper suspension.

Anyone looking for a drivers car should be looking elsewhere though, reliability and heated door handles be damned!

5500 i30's sold last month. Wonder how many of them were actual sales?

Either rental companies have had a end of financial year buying spree or there will be plenty of so called "showroom demo's" popping up for sale in the next few months.

Nissan thought this was a good idea 18 months ago and it didn't go down well for them.

I purchased an I30 for my wife to run around in they are a great little car with a lot features for a good price that is why they sell (they also have a torque convertor auto as well)

I wonder if there is any truth to this statement? Were they not just under $20k drive away, and is there still that $20k instant write off deal (as many times as you like??) for business?

Much like there was a whole lot of stuff for sale at exactly the same price as those cheques we got a few years ago from Mr Rudd.

Tax write off is for small business ( annual turnover under 2m) - rental companies do buy in bulk but are excluded from these offers in terms and conditions .
They get decent fleet pricing anyway .

I don’t know how important long term reliability is in the minds of new car buyers these days.

Of late it seems that every year is now a record sales year for new vehicles in Australia which indicates many buyers are turning them over at the end of warranty and buying new again.

It’s those in the second hand market that may suffer the impact.

For their ultimate owners yes - as the "quality" brands of both groups. But local buyers don't seem to be going much for those quality brands. Admittedly deterred by a price penalty for Lexus but not so for Skoda.

Agreed but I wasn’t talking about new cars and their depreciation at resale.

I was making a comment in regard to the long term reliability of modern cheap cars.

New car buyers probably don’t care about long term reliability if they are continually trading them at the end of the warranty period for newer models.

It’s more likely to be the buyers who purchase them second hand that will eventually suffer as they start to fail.

I guess that says something about the throwaway society we now live in.

I'd say people turning them over every 3 years are getting them through fleet companies. I know the wife has this option and no real difference between 3 or 5 years when looking at the numbers.

You need to ask yourself "What would Hulk do? And then do the opposite.

Cars with a 7 year warranty and capped servicing are going to outsell everything if the price is good, and features roughly the same as other brands. I know I would consider Kia or Hyundai for our next family truck (Everest way too expensive for what it is, and Ford quality is...Ford quality)

Dude. stop hating. its a good result even if that was true that they demoed cars. What and Ford doesnt when they make their employees swap cars at super low kms so that they can get their numbers up? I suppose in reality Ford would need to get 5501 of their employees to drive a focus if they wanted to beat that i30 number as there isnt anyone left dumb enough to buy the lemon of a car the focus is.

Just looking at the top 50 cars ranked by sales here:

The Focus sit at 48 with 4087, the Pulsar at 47 outsold it with 4101 and even the geriatric Lancer at 36 with 4858 shows the Focus a clean pair of heels.

It really shows with results like this just how on the nose with the buying public Ford has become.

Surely Ford has to do something soon to turn results like this around.

No hate, I can understand why it sells (warranty, price, features) and is a great choice for non "car people" but I think this month is a bit inflated compared to its usual place in the monthly sales figures.

With all the downsizing does Ford Australia even have 5501 employees ?

Don't know about where you are, but I can't drive anywhere without seeing dozens of them every day. Given the ludicrous pricing of the Ranger (especially in diesel auto twin cab form) it's no surprise there's more Tritons around...

Hyundai's also seem to be everywhere. I know several people with them. hatchbacks, SUV's, the lot. Seem to be a hell of a lot of those Velosters around too...very popular and in the right colour they're actually not a bad looking car.

For some years I've always thought that the Ford Europe mainstays, the Focus and Fiesta, were great cars and well-built as well. Europeans are always very good at getting maximum space and practicality out of a small package. The previous Focus was particularly good.

But lately Focus and Fiesta seem to have gone the poky Asian direction which is bad news because the Focus class is a family car in Europe and even the Fiesta is used by small families.

These two reviews comparing class top sellers summarise the ways things have gone:

Note how the reviewer couldn't fit the baby stroller in the boot of the Fiesta and how the Fabia's boot is as big as a Focus's.

The general message seems to be that the Fords are great cars to drive, which is fine if you're a young, single revhead, but they don't stack up as practical, roomy cars. (And the VAG cars are also great to drive anyway.) For a European car that's a seriously lost plot.

I had personal experience recently when we were shopping for a second small car for the wife. It was down to Fiesta, Polo and Fabia. I couldn't even get into the driver's seat of the Fiesta to drive it (I'm 1.9 tall), the whole car was just so stupidly squashed and tiny. She chose the Fabia - which I have no trouble getting into.

Another shot in the foot by One Ford?

Awhile ago my friend bought a Hyundai i30 because he didn't want to wait for the focus hat they wanted....and that fit the pram in the boot.
They didn't check.....got it home and the hyundais boot is so small they now have to fold the seats to take the pram. Compared to their other slightly older focus they regret the Hyundai big time. Interior falling apart..a bit, but the handling is crap compared to the dynamic focus.
Doesn't appear to have shot Hyundai in the foot that they have a small boot

A lot of people don't think about practical things when they buy a car.

I think Ford have given up on the space race with Focus and Fiesta and are concentrating on the singles and fleet markets in Europe. Meanwhile Octavia (properly-designed family car) is on the verge of knocking Focus out of second place in class in Europe, leaving VAG to completely dominate that sector.

Here are some examples of vital dimensions from the compact and sub-compact sectors (including Focus and Fiesta):

Internal width at second row seat: Octavia 1449, Hyundai 1395, Fabia 1384, Focus 1336, Fiesta 1244 (Mazda unknown).

Headroom front: Hyundai 1018, Focus 993, Fiesta 993, Fabia 989, Octavia 983 (Mazda unknown).

Headroom rear: Fabia 994, Octavia 980, Focus 962, Fiesta 944, Hyundai 863 (Mazda unknown).

Cargo (behind second row): Octavia 568, Hyundai 378, Focus 316(hatch)/421(sedan), Mazda 3 408, Fabia 300, Fiesta 276, Mazda 2 250.
I had to get Fiesta figures from overseas, Ford Australia doesn't publish them although they do for Focus. Mazda don't give their internal dimensions at all except luggage capacity. I reckon that when a manufacturer won't publish figures they've got something that doesn't look so good to hide. They don't count on people like me ferreting out sites like Edmunds.com! (I'll have to dig up Mazda there!)

One thing about Hyundai is that they make a bit of a better effort on internal space than the Japanese. But Skoda makes a proper effort on internal space. Ford has gone backwards in those two sectors.
