Im just stating the facts about what is or isnt a 5 star safety car. Many of these 5 star cars can be had cheap on the used car market

Its only my opinion and choice to commute my family in a 5 star safety car. Its not a bad idea though.

Yes...yes I am.

Because...and I don't know if this is because I'm a motorcyclist or because I accept reality or both...I know that there are risks every time you step out the door, much less go out driving/riding on the road.
You can attempt to minimise risk, but there's no use being silly about it and being afraid of old cars. I have a sister-in-law who is a nurse, and she refuses to buy any car without at least six airbags and a host of electronic trickery in it.
I once drove her to a nearby shop in my Celica and she was honestly, white-knuckled afraid when the traffic got a bit heavy. I actually think she thought she was about to die at any moment for no reason but that we were in an old car.

What sort of life is that to lead, being afraid all the time???

As with speeding, I'm sure we all know people we wouldn't drive around a car park at 10kph with, while happily sitting in the passenger seat snoozing off while others drive a car at 110+ on the highway.

But you live in an area in Sydney less safe than other areas in Sydney? Don't you feel guilty about placing your family in such an environment when there are safer areas.

You can have the safest driver in your car but you have no control over the other drivers on the road or other circumstances. It's not all about what the driver in your car does. If your in a "not at fault" accident then the safety of your car will very much matter.

I was driving along the other day in a 5 star safety car at 110km/h when all of a sudden a kangaroo hopped out in front of me and just hopped past the car as I sped through.. At this time, it flashed through my head that whatever the outcome I had every safety feature possible to protect me and my occupants.

You can ignore the list I've posted and the relatively low cost to get into a 5 star safety car but it's at your own peril.

Ah..."the other drivers" are why you should restrict yourself to a new or near new car.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...car manufacturers have a massive vested interest in getting rid of old cars. I can count at least four helpful suggestions to government which pop up over the years every now and then since I started driving in 1982, backed by various large manufacturers.
One was "ban cars older than 10 years from the roads"...another was "five years and older", others were things like suggestions on restricting usage of older vehicles...all in the name of safety of course...not to try and increase new car sales...*cough*...

Japan was usually quoted as a shining example where they make cars older than about three years more and more expensive to register via strict mechanical checks. Other examples were countries where new cars are very cheap, and correspondingly second hand cars are stupidly cheap.

Now it's a helpful push to drive later model cars because hey look they're peachy keen cheap and a cheap second hand late model car full of airbags and electronics simply won't cause major servicing and financial issues later on for the lower income people they are being pushed at who now drive older cars...
...and besides...

I was riding to work two nights ago and had a massive roo hop across the road a couple of meters in front of me when I was doing 100kph.

Did I turn around, take the bike home, and drive the air-bag-filled Triton to work?
Did I go in the next day to cancel my motorcycle licence?
Did I sell my bike because of what might have happened?

No, I thought "christ that was close", and kept riding.

If people want to live in a state of constant fear for yourself and those in your car when out on the big scary road, go right ahead. But don't try and force others to do the same thing.
And believe me, I would wager that somewhere behind this sudden rash of helpful advice about "cheap safe cars", there will most likely be the next simpering suggestions to government about getting rid of those pesky old cars off the road.

Gee, my daily doesn't appear on any list good or bad, this can only mean it has never been crashed and thus must be the safest car in the country. If its never been crashed then it cant be considered for inclusion on a most crashworthy study.
Therefore I must deduce we should all drive my car as its super safe

That was 60kph into a solid unyielding object as opposed to another crumply car.
I'm feeling reasonably confident...collapsable steering column did it's job, chucked around a bit but that's to be expected with no air bags, nobody smashed into the far-away windscreen as with some other cars, fuel tank didn't rupture, floor didn't fold up, doors still opened, you can see the forces going around the passenger cabin through the roof and rear quarter behind the doors to deflect them away from the driver, not 100% sure because of old film but didn't appear to be any red or yellow imprints on the white frosted dash from knees or faces of the dummies...

Not selling...going to keep driving it...I call that safe...

Just the other day whilst driving a half star rated car, I came across a kangaroo that unfortunately had jumped across my path whilst I was travelling at 110kph.

Poor kanga was sideclipped and knocked out cold.

Having my doctor friend sitting alongside, we had a chat and agreed the kangaroo had more safety features than my current vehicle.

In actual fact, agreement was made the kangaroo had a three star ANCAP rating - no further question was then asked - couldn't keep driving a half star death trap, revived the kangaroo, via my doctor friends handy CPR unit, jumped into it's nice comfy pouch and off down the road we went.
