my little sister has been using msn since she was 10, she's had no issues, i was using it at that age, no issues here. sure there are certain things you need to teach her (like dont fall for the gimics that say to click here and you'll win a prize, and only too alow people she knows to be her friend on msn/myspace...) i think she would actually know enough about it herself... just be prepared for her too spend a lot of time on it (if you have limited internet hours) because we sure as hell do! DO NOT put it in her bedroom, keep the computer in an area that you can visit frequently such as a study or a loungeroom ect ect. just so you can monitor anything that worries you (such as porn sites, virus's ect ect) By the way i am 17... ive been using ICQ/MSN since i was 12. Myspace, i got back in 2005 when i was 17.
its no biggie. sure there are freaks and weirdo's out there. but you just gotta have some common sense about you. no giving out personal info etc etc. but these days i dont really care. anybody could track me down by my car which i drive everyday of the week. they could track you back to here via pictures you may have posted of your car with the numberplates visible. some guy gets his mate with his contacts to look up your address, these freaks come around and rape your dog. realistically, it is much easier to find out who people are in an evironment like this rather than places like myspace. i myself have tracked back some members of houseofcommodores.com.au they were being tossers, and a couple of the cars had HOC stickers on them. i remember the plates, went home, logged on to HOC and figured out who they were, had they msn addresses and their myspace addresses. the internet is a scary place. but really, just teach them common sense. wouldnt you much rather know what they are doing on the net, like msn and myspace rather than have them going behind your back and getting onto these things at school or friends houses or whatever?

Personally I wouldn't read recorded convo's of my kids. I'd put the computer in a well used room and walk past every so often and not let them spend too much time on it.. But, well, I got msn when I was in about grade 4 or 5 (year ~1998 ish) and I would have hated it if mum or dad were reading all the stuff me and my mates were talking about.
I just think it could backfire, and if the kid has half a brain (sounds like they know more than you already!) they can turn the log stuff off, then back on in the options menu i'm pretty sure. The last thing you want to do is snoop around your child and distance yourself that way.. Especially with the whole 'emo' trend going around, you need to be upfront with your kid and communicate. I also think they have to learn sooner or later. And if all their friends are doing it, they will to (they could EASILY start a myspace account at a friends or school, we used to), you might as well show them the 'right' way.

All kids will do on the net is talk to creeps or other little 14 year olds about sex etc. Every kid does it, I started using a PC when I was 12 and I was a sneaky little ****. No way would I ever let my kids use MSN or anything. Ive set up keyloggers on some of my mums friends computers, and every single time its the same thing. But thats me.

Blah! You cant monitor your kid 100% of the time. Sure you can block all the X-Rated stuff fine, but come on, these are chat programs and communication tools.Blocking something like myspace or msn is a little bit controlling dont you think?
If your worried about there myspace....then make one yourself and then add the kid. You can look at there profile and see who is leaving comments and what not. MSN...just keep an occasional eye. I find it funny how everyone is worried about programs like this yet kids these days have mobile phones, fashionable clothes, attitudes and more available funds then I do!

Kids and the internet...
If they cant access what they want at home they will just go to a friends house where they can. Simple rules 1. A child that age dont let them have a computer in their room. 2. Make sure the people on their MSN list are school friends ask for the phone numbers and talk to the other kids parents. I used this phone list once for a lad who was a bit off when I spoke to his father (he also had daughter) his son got a tanned backside and lost access to the internet for a Loooong time. A good router will allow you to block sites by URL and word filters. Also you can see if your kids will use good judgement in what they access

Two private convos started straight away: <interested male #1> ASL? <me> 14/f/frankston, u? <interested male #1> bye <interested male #2> ASL? <me> 14/f/frankston, u? <interested male #2> 26/m/dandenong, we should catch up sometime! Err... anyway to cut a long story short, my unsuspecting mate got an interesting "random" phonecall :P MSN should be pretty safe, just educate the children on not giving away photos of themselves to strangers or any personal details. Myspace? Private account. |

We have 6 kids, 5 of whom are teenagers. As was suggested earlier I would get familiar with MSN. There is controls that we as parents can use to log the chats.
We also have our computer in the lounge room where they all know we will & do walk up on them at any time .... OH is an expert at doing this quietly & has sprung his daughter a few times. Dont hide the fact that you are logging chats and that you will be checking things out. When they complain I just tell them that its in my job description to make sure their safe and at least I care enough to protect them ..... I only have to get to the job description bit now & they finish the sentence ;) Good luck ..... teenagers are fun :P |

id say yes i would, but id check her myspace and all comments and friends etc...
it'd be like do i let her try alcohol or dope.....again id remove the temptation to go behind your back and get into trouble or something worse then you find it out too late, if they turn out to be alco's or drug dealers then you know that early intervention can actually work.......we learn from our mistakes msn will actually record all conversations to txt files, myspace CAN be set to private so she can only invite or accept invites from people she knows......remove the temptation, see if she can be trusted thats what id do

Rather then not allowing them access, how about just teaching your daughter to not fall for the kind of tricks people use. Setting your MySpace to private, making sure she only speaks to friends on MSN, never handing out personal info etc.
If I knew my parents read my MSN convos as a teen (which they didn't) I wouldn't have bothered using it. Biggest "I don't trust you" ever... |

When I first got online at home, Dad wasn't impressed (had just started working casual and was paying for it myself), but he sat down with me and I asked him if there was anything he wanted to look up, or for me to explain/show to him. Then he got more comfortable with me using it.
Dad and I are pretty close, so he knows he can trust me. I guess it depends on if you think your daughter is mature enough to respect the rules you set regarding her use of MSN/Myspace/internet in general, and that she understands the consequences of breaking those rules.

I'm the network admin for a network at a Tafe college here in WA, and I block all morally-reprehensible sites and services (youtube, myspace, google videos, MSN etc.) even though the average student age is something like 19/20.
We have younger under-18 students enrolled aswell who we need to fulfil duty of care requirements, red tape, etc. for. Sites like youtube, amongst others, disgust me, with the amount of school-yard fighting, bullying, violence, etc. I think these sites need to step up and attempt to regulate the content they host a bit better. Anyone can sign up and view/upload a video, it's a free-for-all. If I had kids, they would never see these sites until they're 18.

My sister has just finished up a 12 month contract at the 'National Child Protection Clearinghouse", a gov agency that conducts research and prevention into child abuse, it has been very educating for our entire family.
You think you know what's going on, truth be told, we no jack sh!t ! I would NOT let any person under 18 years into any chat room such as 'My Space' It is estimated that less than 20% of profiles on My Space contain honest and factual information. All this = TROLL CITY....
