Dare i say best bang for buck 2000 model volvo s60 T or s80. cops will leave you alone and they go decent for a volvo

Hard pressed to find a better kitted out car for that money - they start at 15k.

If that fails 25k might get you a bmw e36 m3 or a e46 3 series of some sort.

A civic with VTEC is hardly slow, and thank you for you're generalizations about who drive preludes, because i happen to have one,and love it to death, its better overall then my BF XR6.Have been examining VTEC very closely and have been trying to adapt it to a CBR motor for engineering,is not going very well at the moment.

My first car was a $250 1987 Mitsubishi Colt. Had that tricky 8 speed manual lol. Was an awesome car for the price, loved it heaps. Just bought a BA XT for $9450, love it to bits. I'm still 16 btw

You throw that sports word in there and the insurance company get all nervous.
I think the idea of having an older car or crappy car up first is not too bad cause i did it and slowly worked my way up to a decent car.
But don't stop him getting what he wants its just going to cause issues if you do.
It would probably cost around the same as a modded commodore. I had a BA XT and it was stock standard, lowered on 20's and insurance for it was $1600/yr through just car if i remember correctly. It was only a couple of hundred more to insure an XR6T. As soon as you do anything like that to a car it'll cost ya.

The 1.6 VTEC Civics are not fast. With a 0-100 time of 7.3s and 1/4 time of 15.8 when new... that puts them firmly in the slow category. And since by now they'd be mostly ragged on and thrashed, most would be lucky to pull a low 16.

Must be awesome to be overtaken by soccer mum's in their Territory 7-seaters in your "hot," Civic...

They were quick enough back in their day (1988 or so) and compared to the Breeze (1.3 litre carby model – the cheapest way in to a Civic) they must feel supersonic. A stock B16 Vtec Civic was competitive with my stock D16 engined CRX back in the 80’s/90’s which makes it pretty good overall.

A friend literally has a room full of trophies 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, best in class, fastest lap times from his B16-engined CRX. This thing was his road car that was raced in Victoria, NSW and South Australia and it would regularly scare cars with much bigger reputations. There is a white 1600cc Honda Civic sports sedan in Rothmans colors down here that will tear many a car a new belly button.

Wow. Is this an advertisement for the next fast and furious movie? I'm not sure if I'm being spammed or not.

Firstly, what's the theory behind 18yr old girls not liking male passengers if they drive a Falcon or Commodore (oh, unless they've modified it) ?

I didn't know landing heaps of face was important when I was 18. What is landing heaps of face?

...and lastly, which McDonalds car park will you be at tonight? I want to land me some face.

Peace out.

I reckon as a young bloke you cant go past a ute. You can sleep on it, put your bike on it, move house with it (move out of home wink wink) they are practical, they look good and have a cool factor even if they are japanese. And the best thing is they hold their value really well. Get him into a late model turbo diesel 2WD hilux or Courier/ranger something like that. Something with decent tyres and brakes.

Lower it a bit (not a lot), tint the windows, comfy, economical, practical and they look cool.

Good luck.

Couple of examples

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn1873589.aspx

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5745312.aspx

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5569823.aspx

Haven driven a 4WD 2.5TD I would probably lean toward the 3L TD but given he is a P plater and he isnt getting out of a V8 falcon like I did, the 2.5TD would be fine.

Having been 18 with a standard Ford Fiesta Zetec at that time... let me tell you now... 18 year old chicks have no problem being picked up in one of those. In fact, most were saying things like "wow, you drive a brand new car," and complimenting on that fact.

Now my latest AND more depressing dilemma!!
My son got his license today. For the last 6 months or so, it's been.. "I want a HQ".. His mum and myself have convinced him that a 35, 36yr old HQ, with his VERY limited mechanically minded skills (He's doing IT at Uni), plus not having a garage at his mum's was just crazy.
Now he's gone Commodore mad.. "I want a VX, VY or VZ" He has around 25k saved, and as you can imagine, is itching to get his own wheels.
I've tried the tack.. "spend 5 or 6k on a reasonable 2nd hand jap car for your 1st, and build your kitty" Or seeing he is determined to spend the bucks, maybe a 2yr old Focus, or Mazda 3, or even another Astra... But NO, he insists it's his money!
He also insists that he doesn't want "rice" or a "girl's car"...
I've also pointed out that any Commodore with P plates is like a moth to a flame with cops, with thieves, is expensive on fuel, and statistically not a real safe bet all round.
Now, come on you younger guys on here... HELP!!.. Just what "smaller" car isn't classed as girlie or rice?.. Is there something besides a commie (or Falcon, for that matter) that is practical, that's not a magnet to the constabulary, and yet STILL has a bit of class and "street credo"
Advice appreciated!!
My first car was an EB, recently I sold it after 5 years of solid service while I was at university. I did the whole practical/cheapskate thing and bought a 2002 BJ Mazda 323 1.6: gutless, no street cred but it's a manual, it holds the road well and it feels safe. Stacks of room for a small car. I'm happy with it, the consumption is excellent given that I drive about 100km a day.

A lot of people are bandying about this "reliable jap car" for $5000 idea like they grow on trees or something; I found it was hard to find anything in this price range that was in excellent condition, safe and less than 15 years old. $10000 is a nice sweet spot; I picked up mine for $10200. The extra $5000 is an investment, I promise because you will get so much more from the car. It's the difference between a 1995 model that's done 200,000 and a 2002 model that's done 90,000. Or 7 years extra service. Honda, Toyota, Mazda, they're the best if you look at the satifaction surveys.

Let's get one thing straight about street cred; the only thing that really turns my head is a well sorted classic (or a modern classic). I couldn't care less about your rushed, plasticy WRX STi, your dirty, rough running clubsport or your lowered, pumped out EL with stuff hanging off it everywhere and a stupid, loose exhaust. I also hate when someone takes a car that everyone knows is crap (like a late 90's hyundai or proton) and tries to give it cred. I really respect cars where you can see the effort put in by the owner to making it look tasteful and well looked after. This could be a restored GT coupe, a concours MG or a subtley modified 350Z for example. Cars that are finished, complete, well looked after, not the usual P plater trashmobiles.

So my advice to your son would be this - get a shopping trolley / whitegood / whatever like I did, pay $10,000, drive it into the ground, and save and research to customise a vehicle with true cred at you're own leisure.

well how much will he use his car? If he doesnt drive 500+ kms a week like i do, fuel efficiency isnt much of a concern. I am only 18, i drive an old EA Fairmont Ghia, and depsite the plates, it is INVISABLE to the cops. A newer model, like an AU or BA Ghia would be a great buy. Fairlanes and LTDs are also very cheap now.

Its all about appreciating the car you have. I got my firt Datto Skyline for 950 dollars, sold a bunch of video game consoles to get it when i was 17 last year. Had it for about 5 months, bought an EA Falcon S, sent the two cars on their way and saved up 2,000 dollars of hard earned cash, at 8 dollars per hour at Pizza Hut, minus all the shitloads of fuel i had to spend on the 18l/100kms datsun and 14l/100kms Falcon S while delivering with them. I got a mint condition Silver EA Ghia Series 2, and i drive it to this day. I have had it for about 8 months now, and i take great care of it, i drove it 19,000 kms since getting it. If mummy and daddy would have gotten ME a 25k car, i would have got a Porsche 928 S or a V12 Jag XJS and i would have wrapped it into the nearest tree at 200 km/h the day i got it. Did your son earn his 25k at such a young age?
