hey guys im lookin at doin the drive down to melbourne from the gold coast, i'd planned on going from home to syd in one day then stayin the night then from syd to melb the next, is that do-able? it's long drive i know but im lookin to make the trip a bit more interesting, anyone know anything worth stopping for a look at? also any places in melb that would be worth going and seeing?
i'll be staying with a mate for the week im in melb, and might end up staying at a motel for the night im in sydney, anyone have a rough idea on how much i'd have to spend? thanks |

That's a good drive but expect to be on the road GC to Syd 9 or so hours, and Syd to Melb in at least 8.
Where you planning to stay in Sydney? Eg area.. If you don't wanna stay in the city, and want to stay on the cheap, Hotel Formule 1 in Liverpool will probably be the cheapest and least out of the way. You'll also be going opposite to peak traffic in the morning. Check out sites like wotif and lastminute for places to stay.

Probs somewhere out of the city, might give Hotel Formule 1 a go, see how much it'd be for one night.
cheers for the info |

Your best bet is going down the newell highway and staying overnight in Dubbo.
Then through Shepperton to the hume then on to Melbourne. |

Yep, I second myxr6's way, except turn off at Wyalong and go through Wagga to Albury. From there to Melb it's 300k's of 110kmh freeway
Via the Newell means A LOT less traffic. which means less tourists! You dont have to fight (and pay) your way through Sydney. You dont have to battle the road works, and subsequent traffic hold ups, that run from Coolac to the Vic border. -they're upgrading the Hume to dual highway and there are a LOT of 80k speed zones. before the road works started it would take you about 2hrs for that section. Now, who knows?- Bris to Melb via the Newell (through Wagga/Albury) would be about 18hrs driving time. We do it in 20hrs in a speed limited B-Double.

Thanks fellas, wouldn't think that heading inland would be quicker than sticking to the coast lol, going to be alot more interesting heading out that way as well.
Anywhere decent to stay over in Dubbo? |

Dubbo is full of motels, thanks to the open plains zoo, from Formule 1 to top class motels (if there is such a thing )

plenty to see in and around melbourne, here`s a link if thats any help, http://www.melbourneaustralia.org/attractions.html , there is also a ferris wheel near the docklands that would be worth a visit if its up and running just for the views, one of the members might have info on that, Ford discovery centre in geelong ? not forgeting the diversity of food places around melbourne, lygons st is pretty full on for food places, here`s another link.....http://www.melbourne.com.au/, have fun.
