Hey,
After talking with a friend about 5 minutes ago I was reminded about the current trend on cruises. Not usually on AFF cruises but on other cruises I've noticed that certain groups snub other groups when thry try to be friendly. For example on an all car cruise I noticed that the Jap import crew had no interest in speaking to me because I just parked up in an XR8. ALso getting the looks of disgust. Now I'm not talking about going up and getting to know the blokes I'm just talking about saying g'day in passing. The worst I've found are the Guys that are into the American classics now my 3 most desired cars in the world are a 68 charger, a 70 Vette or a dropped and chopped 40's 50's f series. So naturally I want to go and look and talk to the guys. The worst case I've had was when i was talking to a guy that owned a 68 charger, and he was heaps friendly and we were chatting and then I told him i was 20 and drove an XR8 and BANG his attitude changed. Now im not particularly fussed, I don't give a rats. I was taught growing up that "all men are created equal" meaning that I don't care what you drive if approached I'm going be friendly. I'm just wondering is this an SA phenomenon or does this happen interstate aswell??? I'm not sure I described the vibe I get from these guys but those who have had this happen will know what im talking about

I am thinking this thread may just create wars, but I often find a decent number of people who have a love for classics think anything that doesn't have a chrome bumperbar is not worth even a glance.
Now I must admit, I am not a massive fan of classic cars, however I still admire and appreciate the effort put into them. And I do like a few of the older beasts, but as I said; Generally they don't interest me quite as much. (I must admit though, I am liking older cars more and more as I get older haha)

I usually see it that there is always the group that can appreciate a nice car no matter what it is and the person that owns it and the other group that if you don't have a car like theirs/as good as theirs you may aswell not be there

Ive actually never encountered this. Everyone ive spoken to on a cruise run has been very friendly. Admittedly it was all classic vehicle owners (ive rarely been on a modern car cruise), but they didnt mind the fact i had an XR8. They actually are really encouraging me to get my older vehicles on the road.

Oh, my observation is from Car shows, not cruises.
Also, yes Kenz, that is probably the best way to put it. There are these people in all makes, models, eras.

If people don't want to talk to you because of the car you drive then they're not worth worrying about.

If it makes you uncomfortable, just leave. You can't change human nature. And it shouldn't upset you.

im 15, and on cruises/meets etc, Im welcomed and encouraged by others... I remember last year on the Terrigal Cruise many guys and girls wouldn't have a problem talking to me, and liked what i had done to the wagon.. if you dont like it, just leave.. hopefully i'll never have to do that, but friendliness is the main factor in it. cars are cars.

Most owners of classics/rods resto's are happy to talk about their ad-naseum. Getting them to shut-up is harder!!!
But even in car clubs there are individuals who think they're more special than others because their car is either a) highly desirable and rare and the rest of you should be kneeling before them and their car, b) or can spot a non genuine split pin form 50 paces so how dare you arrive at this event with non-genuine accessories fitted that are not detailed on the compliance plate. Your car should look like it did the day it rolled off the line.... I just tend to ignore them and their little circle because not all people are assholes and there are some people who love nothing more than to chat about their car. But I will say this, you can get sick and tired of some knuckle dragging neantherdal wandering over and leaning on your car while feeding you ******** about your car, or why did you change this, or when they owned one like it or my mates got a..... They're the ones that arrive to an event in a multi coloured barely legal **** box. I notice these days too that people aren't all that happy to acknowledge you when you show your appreciation by giving them a wave or give the thumbs up when you pass them on the street. Just an hour ago I passed a gorgeous yellow XB GS coupe passing in the opposite direction and we gave a wave and a thumbs up and he gave us a look as if we just kicked his quarter panels in. |

Yeah Brian I have had this, interestingly though when I attended the RCK cruises back a few years ago, the commodore boys would give me flak for driving a ford but at least they just joked, they where always accepting of me and didn't mind that I was in a ford. Muscle car cruises however, if you are young and in a new model car they seem to dislike you? No idea why.

That was the reason I didn't renew my membership with a certain local club here in Brisbane.
So yes OP, I know what you mean.

I had the thought aswell that maybe its because they don't think its as special as you do. In my area theres a few lads out there with old corollas (ke70's and the like) All mint condition restored, the other night while delivering pizza in the sigma. I got a wave from one of these lads. then last night a customer came out of his house to have a look at it. TO me its just a **** box i bought so i could get a 2nd job and will rip out and turn it into a drag car of something later

I've experienced similar on a couple of occasions.
Once in Tassie when almost every night we seemed to be at the same motel as the MG Car Club - they had a week's touring on the little island. Both my wife and I tried several times to strike up converstions with various of their members but got the cold shoulder every single time - we were in one of our taxis (the black one) - obvioulsy not good enough for them! Another time ... at Wakefield Park I tried to chat with some of the guys in their EVOs, WRXs, Skylines etc but they wouldn't even look my way ... again in my lowly Ford! However their attitude changed somewhat when the lowly Ford embarassed the carp out of most of them, even some of the modified ones! LOL. |

The hotrod owner was offended by your remark "im 20 and have a xr8"
Obviously it was 40 degrees that day and you had your climate control on whilst he was sweating like a pig in his old clunker. He also knew you would bolt away from Him if push come to shove He thought you were trying to take the limelight away from Him. |

For the older car owning chaps perhaps they see young guys in newer cars as the enemy that's created the current hooning situation with there stupidity where as they appreciate cars the young guys just thrash them and hoon about i know its not a realistic view but it might explain some of there resentment?

BHDOGS that is complete crapola. Back in the glory days of these cars, you could burn around St Kilda, or Port Melbourne, or Werribee or Dandenong in these cars, burnout's drag's et cetera without the risk of ploddy plod plod ripping off your nuts and frying them on the carbie for simply "excessive acceleration" and I hear from most blokes whose hey day was back then, that many young car nuts would test the limits of their vehicles frequently, and most of the time, many a cop would give them a warning and a slap on the wrist.
I don't think the younger gen is the problem. We have not changed. The Police and government has. A friend of mine just bought one of those new GTR's (the latest godzilla one that everyone's fapping over). Took me for a spin last night and the police pulls him over for accelerating too hard. No speed, no nothing, just accelerating too hard. He was (rightly) let off, but come on. Anyway, this isn't a cop bash, but just an back up to my theory.. |

Pretty common from my experience, alot of "Groups" will stick to themselves, but it's not just car clubs, its any group/club activities.
Try being involved in a Dog club, then you will really see some human behaviours at its finest.. Last edited by FPV8U; 06-03-2011 at 10:41 PM. |

Look I have a few classic cars and I'll always talk to anyone if I have the time. But (I might get flamed for this) I'm not really interested in new cars I have a BA XR6 and yes it's a nice car to drive. But it the shopping trolley and the family get around car. I do like the look of some of the new cars but you can see them anywhere like any carpark or out side schools waiting to pick up there kids. And I know that they are faster and out handle any of the old cars I got in the shed but they just don't do it for me. Maybe in another 20 odd years they might. But I would never be rude to anybody that has a passion for their car, because when I was young my hardtop was pretty common and I still loved it. And I still love it now.
To the fella that saw the coupe that gave hime a dirty look, he proberly was wondering what you were waving at. Look sometime I get flashed at or waved at and my first reaction is to brake as I think there must be cops or something a head. Or sometimes I'm just in my own little world cruising along listing to some old rock songs and someone will wave, and by the time I realize what they are waving at it's to late. |

We own the new G6E. We also own a modified '82 Toyota Celica. Not to mention the 1957 Morris Minor. We've also owned Holdens, other small and large Fords, Mazdas, Toyotas, and English cars. We're "car people", not one-eyed "Brand X people".
I've been told more than once that we should "pick a make and stick to it"...To which I ask "why?"...what's wrong with being a true car enthusiast, someone who takes enjoyment in all sorts of car, be that enjoying the comfort and power of a modern luxury car, chucking an old Celica with fat tyres and stiff suspension down a twisting road, or laughing like hell as you flog a little old English car along a country road? Why limit yourself to one particular make or type of car, and sometimes even then only one particular type of vehicle made by that manufacturer? It never made sense to me I'm afraid... Hahaha I like this thread. The best was when I went with my mate who owned a very well modified S15. Every one saw me jump out of the passenger seat in my HSV jacket. You can guess what 95% of the nationality was there. We went around and did the meet and greet, could only get one guy there to speak to me who used to own a Monaro. I got disgusted looks from everybody there...rooftop car park meet ffs...

I love my Holdens, but when I'm wearing one of my Holden shirts at any sort of car gathering be it a show, or a cruise I always respect other peoples' cars.
I often walk up to old Fords, Dodges, Chrysler's etc with a Holden shirt on just admiring them, and in turn have never had any problems. Most of the comments I get about my VL these days come from middle aged blokes. Which is a relief since they don't see me as a young idiot. |
