Choose Territory Replacment

If you could choose what would be your choice for a replacment for the Territory?
Ford does have some ready made replacments in the Edge, Explorer and maybe the Flex http://www.ford.com/new-suvs-crossovers/
If they made them RHD which would you choose? or would you like something else in the Ford catalogue?
I have a Territory now and I will probably update before they stop making them but if they bought out the Explorer to replace it I wouldn't be disapointed it looks good inside and out. But then the Edge looks good too! just a bit to small maybe.

I think within Ford, the Edge is the closest match to what the rest of the market is putting out.

I thought the Everest was going to be alot dearer than what the Terri is now, thought I read that they were pitching them at Landcruiser buyers? I might be wrong
I would buy a Explorer if they came here and if Ford got the pricing right, they look good, pleanty of room to cart the kids and their stuff, not to bad on fuel, a winner for me.

I hope to see the new Edge, Explorer and Everest all be sold next to each other. When Ford had the Territory, Ford Aus would have to protect it by avoiding selling the other SUVs here (I also realize that the other cars weren't built in RHD anyway) but when it dies, they can sell whatever.

Edge - closest to the Territory, so bound to sell well.
Explorer - still a soft-roader, but bigger than the Territory/Edge. I've had a lot of people say that they looked at the Territory but it was too small so this should do perfectly.
Everest - the tougher, more agricultural cousin. It'll still spend most of its life in the city, but it'll be a more accomplished off-roader.

I must admit I'd like to see a larger Ford SUV but I'm unaware of any in the Ford family that are build in RHD. We all know how popular the F250-350 was and the amount of 'Cruiser 200s out there suggests there is a lot of money in the too-large SUV segment...

Everest is SUV based on ute platform and it should compete with Colorado 7 , Isuzu MU-X ,Mitsubishi Challanger as practical SUV with real off road ability . Next competitors are Prado , Pajero and Jeep GC .
Landcruiser is not intended competition as far i can gather , cruisers are at a much higher pricepoint .

I see it this way,
After Territory's demise, that market splits in two and becomes larger by
offering vehicles that better suit their respective target audience:

1) A new Soft roader FWD/AWD that has all the zing and go of the olde RWD Territory but with better economy

2) A new Body on frame off road capable SUV than can handle the rough stuff while giving great economy thanks to diesel.

l think a great market for Ford to step into would be the Land-Cruiser/Patrol category they currently have the market to themselves with the exception of Range Rover and you see all these everywhere.

I have seen these development cars in the flesh a few times. They are based on Ranger, as you say, this will make them half the on-road vehicle the Territory is. Not to say that they will be bad, and of course off road will be much better, but nothing Ranger based will be dynamically anywhere near the on road ability of the Falcon based Territory.

I think the Everest will be a nice vehicle but unless they bring it out in a 2wd model it will be a waist for the wife and kids to cruise around town.

I have a Ranger for 4wd drivin' and hunting and I'm happy with it is very capable off road but the ride in it on the hyw is not even close to the Territory.

Maybe the new supension in the rear end will change my mind

Because being 4X4 has stopped the Prado, 200, Patrol, Pajero, Klugar (until the FWD model arrived), X5 (I think there's a RWD model now), G, RX Cayenne, Discos, Rangies, most Territorys...etc from selling to thousands of city folk who never venture off road?
I do agree that I hope there's a RWD model (to keep costs down) but there's no doubt that the AWD model will be the most popular since people seem to think it's safer.

Forget the Explorer. No RHD, no diesel, no deal. Plus the current D3 based car is up for replacement in the next couple of years.

Edge and Everest is where it will be. Combined with Ecosport and Kuga, there is a great SUV lineup right there that will cater to everybody, except Territory tragics like me who will keep the current one until the wheels fall off.

Don't know. However it is being developed for the Euro market as well, so a diesel is a strong possibility. As the next-gen Edge shares its platform with the new CD4 Fusion/Mondeo, and the Mondeo is supposed to come with a diesel powertrain when it eventually arrives, you could say the new Edge will have a diesel.

I'd tend to agree. I'd be curious to know how many Territorys are sold in RWD form now that you can get either petrol or diesel as well as the 6 speed auto on the RWD model.

Diesel in next gen Edge might depend on production. It will share it's underpinnings with the Galaxy MPV but it might only be built in the US as well. It could be possible to build it anywhere in Europe the Mondeo will be though

If looking for a replacement for Territory's ride and handling, plus AWD and a bit of power (a lot in the turbo models), it could be found in the ranges of: X5/X3, Q5/Q7, Range Rover Sport, Jeep Grand Cherokee (SRT V8 as well) which are priced well and more 4wdable with lesser ride/handling, Mercedes GL/ML...

Most appealing here is the RRS as it does the lot. Most above cost more, and that's a testament to what Ford Australia could achieve on such small budgets - as the review in 2004 said: "Believe the hype: Ford builds an X5 for Falcon bucks!"

All the car you mentioned are probably great suv's but I own currently a Ranger, a Territory and 2 Falcons, so if it aint a Ford I wont buy it

I agree with you Ford hear in Australia have in the past built a great car/suv that in europe would cost twice as much, they are safe, reliable and easy to service, the current and past falcon and territory's are great cars but it seems now days people want a computer on wheels where as I have a computer and I use it at home or work, I have an iPad and a phone that does everything I or the wife and kids want it to do but I never use all this stuff when I'm driving I tend to concentrate on road and getting to where I'm going safely where as others seem to think it's more important to update their Facebook page! or shop online while they are driving
And soon we will live in a world were nobody has to learn how to parallel park!

Territory is the best thing Ford Australia has ever built when it comes to market leading dynamics at a budget price point.

Seriously, you have to spend 100k more to get a comparable vehicle on road as Territory.

And you could buy a new Territory out of the first week depreciation on said 100k+ competitors....

Nobody should underestimate what a package it is now, let alone when it first hit the market nearly ten years ago and really did make everything else in its category look totally completely stupid. As I said earlier in this post, from a worldwide perspective in a particular category of vehicle, nothing ever built in Australia really did lead the market so comprehensively at such a comparatively budget price as Territory. It is not only the most impressive thing done by Ford in this country, it is the most impressive thing done by any car manufacturer in this country, ever.

Next generation Explorer will be due about 2016. With an emphasis on global platforms, hears hoping. I think that Everest will be too small for some, however, there are always non Ford options.

Only a lack of a diesel for so long and the fact that it was only sold by Ford dealers held it back from properly establishing itself in the Australian market place. If it had a diesel within a few years of going on sale, and a Toyota badge, they'd still be selling 3000 a month.
Ford's next big question will be if they should keep the Territory badge and glue it onto the Edge or bring in the new global badges?

EDIT: do people remember that WHEELS issue with the Territory on the front where they praise suggesting it was on par with the X5, Rangie and Cayenne. Go Australia! That time between 2002 and ~2006 was a great time to be a Ford fan.

Theres 35mm width difference between a Ranger and a Prado.
Ranger has 5mm greater track.

Cant find any interior dimensions for the Prado, but I reckon most of the width advantage the Prado has is due it its fat guards. I suggest the Ranger probably has more shoulder room.

Yep, I remember, because I actually did the comparison. Tested a Merc, BMW, Land Rover and Territory and ended buying Terry Ghia. Has been a brilliant car IMHO and still earns it's keep as a work / tow car. It was about $30,000 cheaper than the next cheapest [Landy] A Bloody good buy.
And yes, I will be buying the last model rather than a Yank or Asian product, because, guess what, most of my cash will stay in Australia.
