Saw some leather console lids, and they had a different finish. One had a grainy look and the other was more smooth. Anyone know what the difference is for? Didn't even realise they had different one's

The grainy look one you refer to is actually the 'leather' lid - the 'smooth' one is a vinyl / rubber finish found on the entry level models. Leather is on the Fairmont, Ghia, Fairlane, T-Series and presumably XRs optioned with leather *shrugs*. I'm sure someone on here knows exactly.

An ex upholsterer who has cut into his fair share of leather hides says it is a variation in the texture of the leather

Interesting - photos may tell 1000 words. Would be interested to see what the difference *actually* is and if Ford actually have two different part numbers for leather console lids.

My AUII 75th Anniversary Fairlane came with the bottom more grainy one and I never liked it. It felt hard and tacky. I got another AUII Fairlane and it had the smoother top one in it, and it's so much more nicer and matches the Howe leather on my seats. I swapped them over. So it seems two AUII Fairlanes had different lids.
