Any tips for using this to start engines that have been sitting for a while?
I have two Chev V6's, been sitting for a while, but otherwise in could nick. Can't speak to the status of the carbies though. Turn over no probs, and have spark, so I'm assuming its a fuel issue. (One is a mechanical fuel pump, the other is electric, but I assume they're both starving.) Tried using the SYB, but to no effect. Tried opening the throttle and choke, but nothing. Have used it to start a recalcitrant diesel no probs, but not having much luck here. Any suggestions welcome. |

Sometimes you need 2 people - one to turn the key and the other to spray as the engine is turning over.

How old is the petrol in the things? The reason i ask is trouble shooting an ed a while back which had spark it ran on start ya bastard being dumped in. In the end it was a blocked fuel filter in that case but maybe stale fuel could be an issue. I have a 4.3L chev v6 that hasnt been started in a few years so this fills me with confidence...

Check your compression if its too low even with spark and fuel it wont start.
also excessive cranking can drown your plugs and stop them from working. I assume the timing is also correct ?

If it was only a fuel problem then when spraying SYB it would at a minimum kick cough and splutter if not at least attempt to run so i don think that fuel is the main issue.
while you are doing the above either throw a new set of plugs in or clean the old ones with brake cleaner and heat even if it is only leaving them in the sun for a few hours.

While the plugs are out crank it over for 30 seconds to get all the oil pressure up high as possible.
It should run for a few seconds on SYB but then die if no fuel is getting thru or to the Carburettor. If its been sitting around it may have blocked carby jets??? Fuel these days in O.Z goes stale within a few months and its very common to see blocked jets in Carby's which means ALL jets need to be either cleaned or replaced. |

Ok, got the newer (electrical pump) engine running by priming the lines.
(Gauge which previous read 3/4 of a tank, now shows on empty, so maybe just no fuel) Once primed, it started surprisingly easily, and ran well. Interestingly, once started, and as it started to starve for fuel, I was able to keep it going with a bit of SYB. So going to whack in 20L and see how we go. |
